    @cherrycoke: As long as you haven’t had any issues in past paps/checkups, you should be fine to get on pre-natals, and go off BC. I spoke with my doctor during my annual in May (I was already off BC), and she just made sure I was on pre-natals and asked if I had any questions. So far I’ve had a clear bill of vajajay health, so it was not a big deal. She just said to call when I got a positive or if we still weren’t pregnant in a year.

    Just wanted to share my experience going off the pill: I’m not TTC, but I did go off the pill for 9 months about a year and a half ago after almost 8 years on BC. My periods were VERY regular before I started taking BC (could always track AF within 1-2 days), but in the 9 months I was off, I NEVER once had a regular period – with my cycles ranging anywhere from 1-7 weeks. I thought they would get back to normal, but this never happened, so I went back on the pill.  So, unfortunately, it appears women who were very regular before may also face some of the issues brought up in this post when going off.

    I am not KU, but will give you my story…

    I got AF super early (at 10), but it was always really regular if heavy and accompanied by mind-numbing cramps.  I went on BCP at 18 and was on it continuously for 11.5 years.  I O’ed my first month off BCP (June 2011) and have every cycle since – my cycle is VERY regular, but my post-BCP period is MUCH more normal.  I am currently in the TWW of cycle 5 of actively TTC.  I started charting immediately after stopping BCP so I could get a handle on my cycle.  I know this isn’t for everyone, but I found it very comforting to know what my body was doing and why – plus, charting is the only way I would have known that my body resumed its normal processess immediately.

    I started taking a prenatal about 6 months before I stopped BCP.  I need some new vitamins and have low iron anyway, so I decided that I would just start taking the prenatals.  I also take a fish oil supplement and eat a lot of dairy (otherwise I would recommend supplementing calcium as prenatals tend to leech calcium from your bones).  My annual just before stopping BCP my doctor ran a bunch of blood tests to test for genetic markers and make sure everything (blood, thyroid, hormones, etc.) looked good, but this step is obviously optional and many people choose not to do any type of genetic testing.

    Best of luck to you!

    Regarding seeing a doctor before TTC – I did.  It was comically pointless.  “Yeah, just stop birth control a few months before you try.  And maybe take prenatal vitamins.” Not even “stop drinking” or “get enough fish oil/folates.”

    I’ve been on BC for two years now.  I had a three month pause when my birth control ran out while my husband was deployed, and my period continued on a regular (though not to the hour) schedule with no cramps (they’re all stabby on BC), less acne, effective weight-loss, only a mild craving for cocoa and willingness to watch a sad movie as forewarning (as opposed to eat-all-the-things + b***h mode pms like on BC) and periods back to “ultra-heavy-for-16-hours-then-done” like they were before (instead of normal-for-five-days-and-spotting-for-five-days on BC.)  Oh, how I hate birth control.

    @cherrycoke: regarding acne/bad skin–

    I was on the pill for about 12 years, and tried going off it about 2 years ago (not for TTC, but for other reasons), and I had to go right back on because of the BAAAD acne. Now that I’m 26, and plan on TTC after our wedding I decided to try and go off again and I found a solution for the acne. I went off in July, and definitely started noticing it coming… but two tricks have been INCREDIBLE. 1. Neutrogena’s body Salicylic Acid spray, for my back and chest. 2. Witch Hazel for my face. Witch Hazel is a natural astringent my Future Mother-In-Law told me about that can be used for many things like bug bites, poison ivy, rashes, and ACNE. I don’t know why it has never become popular, because seriously, it’s amazing. It’s only like $3 for a huge bottle, it doesn’t dry you out AT ALL like those astringents targeted for acne users, and again it’s completely natural! I also tried it around my bikini area to see if it would stop razor burn– and it completely vanishes it. It’s amazing. Anyway— just thought you’d like the info!  (Lol- I sort of feel like the mom in My Big Fat Greek Wedding with her Windex).  🙂

    I’m very glad you posted this! I could have written your original post, our situations are so similar. I’m a little bit worried myself about irregular periods.

    @cherrycoke: The brand I’ve been using is Dickinson’s. You’d find it where the peroxide and rubbing alcohol would be in the store……. Now if only I could find a solution to regulate my period! lol.

    Best of luck!
