I am currently just looking online, but I see it can take months to get a dress and also alterations take time. I was wondering how long it usually takes to find the right dress? how soon should I start actually trying on dresses?

I ordered my dress about 8 months early, it came in in weeks(David’s Bridal) and sat in my closet for a couple months before I took it for alterations. Alterations took about 2.5 months total. Picked it up last week, it’s at my MOHs closet now, wedding is June 13th

I bought mine off the rack 6 months before the wedding, alterations took a few weeks after that 🙂

I think I spent approximately two or three months seriously looking (not counting the years I spent on Pinterest.) For a late April elopement, I started trying on dresses in November and had the pre-altered dress in hand by March. I got mine used, but was told by several shops that if I ordered new, I would have to pay rush and it would be tight for alterations. My dress didn’t need that much fixing and was altered in about two weeks.
Nevertheless, several friends told me once I got engaged that I needed to start the process a year in advance because it would take a while to find the right one, could take six months or more to order it, and then at least a month for alterations.

- Wedding: October 2019 - .
I was told it would take 4 to 6 months for my dress to come in (ordered it Oct. of 2018), but it only ended up taking 2 months. I have three fitting appointments scheduled over the three months leading up to my wedding, but will most likely not need the last one.

I purchased my dress last weekend and my wedding is in October 2020. It will not arrive until early December. This is definitely a long time, but my dress was commissioned by the salon and is more on the timeline of a custom gown. I don’t think it’s ever too early to look if you’re comfortable in making that choice solid! Many people have commented to the extent of “won’t you want another, what if you change your mind” yadda yadda. Personally, I know there’s only one dress for me and I already found it!
Definitely get an idea of what you like online, but also remember to be fully open minded. I hate strapless and said don’t even show me any. Guess what my dress is? 😉
