We just bought and moved into our house in November. Our master, dining room, and office are in great shape. We didn’t want to change in the master or office from our old house because we had fairly new furniture in those rooms. And we just got a new dining table last week.

In our living room and guest bedroom, we are still using a mishmash of borrowed furniture, cheap make do pieces, and a few pieces that we will keep. To make matters a little weirder – we moved from my home state (ok) to Idaho and my sister lives here – we actually brought several pieces of furniture that my parents had been storing for her and that she hadn’t been able to get and for several reasons, she hasn’t been able to get the furniture from us yet. So once we get rid of her stuff, we will have to buy a bed for the guest room and a couple of things for the living room.

In our last house, we’d lived there for 2 years when we sold it and there were still some things that I would have changed if we had stayed longer but it definitely felt like home. Our new house isn’t quite home yet, but it’s getting closer.

westafricanlove :  we have lived in our house for 2.5 years and still haven’t furnished all (most) of it.  There are some things that just aren’t desperate enough and we’d rather wait and find exactly what we want.  So our living room still has a used sofa my husband bought about 5 years ago and a recliner I purchased before I even knew him.  Plus an awesome new TV stand we bought last year.  Our dining room has nothing but a (used) table in it – I’ve been searching a searching for a china hutch I actually want and until then all my good china is in boxes on the floor.  Lately I’ve been thinking of getting a chest to throw it in for the time being so I don’t look like a college student.  We got a great bedframe last year, too, but our dressers and night stands are still yardsale crapola.

Contrary to us, my best friend and her husband bought a ton of cheap furniture all at once as soon as they got their house.  It doesn’t reflect their characters, it’s not super comfortable, though it’s okay, it’s just sorta there.  Ultimately I think I’d rather do our slow method and get what looks right for us than to throw a bunch of soulless furniture into our home.  I’m sure she’d think we were nuts for having so much mismatched crap for now.  Different strokes!
