About 2 months, except for on my passport.  I held off on that because I wasn’t leaving the country anytime soon.  I started about 1 month after the wedding and was done with pretty much everything about a month later.

I was married August 14th 2010, and I started paperwork changing my name in March, so 7 months.  I still haven’t changed everything yet – I need to change some banking information, my passport, and I think some other stuff.  I knew that I wanted to change it, I just was busy with school once I finally received my marriage certificate!

9 days (I don’t yet have a passport, that probably would have taken longer). I was really excited to take DH’s name, and didn’t want to wait. The woman at the DMV was super amused.

I was done within about 2-3 months after the wedding, for the most part, although I just realized recently that I still need to change my name on my vehicle registration (did on my DL, though!). Oops 🙂

I probably finished the process about 2 weeks after I started it. I had to wait for a confirmation letter from the SS office before I could start the process at the DMV, and the process at the DMV took 2 visits because I had to renew my license anyway and there was a test involved and long lines (etc. etc.). I started contacting the banks as soon as I had my provisional license, and sent in my passport at the same time (that took another 2 weeks to get back, but I had done my part!).

I have been married before, so this is regarding that time.

I was able to have everything done in about a month. We got our license back rather quickly, about 2 weeks later. The day after I got it, I went to the SS office. That took less than an hour. I was given a “receipt” that stated what my new name would be, and that I had in fact filed for a new adjusted card. I then took that receipt to the DMV with a piece of mail that proved my address. It also took less than an hour to get a new DL ordered with my new name. (Laws vary by state and you may have to wait until you get the new SS card and a piece of mail in your married name before the DOL will let you get a new DL.)

My new DL showed up about two weeks later and then I just took it around to my utilities companies and my college to have everything changed over. The changes with both were immediately effective.

I didn’t have to change my name anywhere else except the bank and that was done over the phone in just a few minutes. (They did ask that they be allowed to photocopy my new DL the next time I came in). I think I got off lucky, though. I’ve never had a passport and didn’t own a vehicle at the time.
