I completed thank you notes for every gift I had gotten prior to the wedding and I wouldn’t let myself cash the checks until I wrote the remaining thank you notes.  It took me about another three weeks to get those out.

I am a horrible person, it took me four months to send my last thank you card.

What about waiting for your photos to come back so that you can send a photo with your thank you? That’s what I’m doing, but is that bad to do?

I sent all thank yous for gifts received at the wedding, the day after the wedding.  Those received before, were sent within 1 day of receiving the gift.

We wrote ours within 2 days of the wedding.. hahahaha.  HOWEVER, we only had 50 people at our wedding, so it was not the overwhelming task a lot of brides have!

We had ours finished and sent within a week of our wedding, but I made them a top priority because

    1) I wanted to have them all done while I still had my sincere thoughts/thanks fresh in my head, and

    2) I didn’t want to have to add them to the list of things to do once we returned from our honeymoon.

I’m still struggling with writing mine. We have SO many to do, Darling Husband isn’t helping and I’m handwriting proper notes rather than just “thank you for the thoughtful gift”. I figured better personal and late than doing what DH’s cousin did and printing out cards with the boring line above.

@liartist:  It’s preferable to send them immediately.  This lets your guests know that you’ve received the gift and are appreciative of the gesture.  It totally bugs me to send a gift and not receive a thank you note until months after.  I’m less concerned with the photo than if you actually received the gift.

While it is poor etiquette to point out someone else’s poor etiquette, I am prone to emailing people to ask if they have received my gift.  Especially if it’s been like a month with no response.

@liartist:  While it is best to thank as soon as possible, I love getting photo thank yous or photos with the thank you. Just make sure it doesn’t take an inordinate amount of time. Sometimes, photographers will agree to release a few photos early so that you can get going on this. I’m willing to grant a bride some extra time if it means I get some photos.

@louisianablue:  We were on honeymoon for most of the month after the wedding, so an email asking where our thank you notes were would have received short shrift.

The rule I’ve seen is two weeks after receipt of the gift for gifts received before the wedding, or one month after return from the honeymoon for gifts received at/after the wedding.  We got the last of ours out one month after the wedding.
