maybe 6-8 months with my first.  i would throw what i needed (diapers, wipes, changing pad) in the stroller storage area or my purse and leave the big bag in the car.

then when #2 came, i got a small backpack.  i found i carried a lot less with 2 kids.  though when potty training started with my oldest, i carry around extra changes of clothes.

my kids are 20m apart.

My baby is almost 1 and I’m stil using her diaper bag for the foreseeable future (but only for long trips or visits to someone’s house, etc). It’s less for diapers and more for extra clothes, toys, snacks, etc. For quick shopping trips I’ll just grab a diaper clutch, if even.

I used one for a few months with my son. I’m pregnant again and will probably use one longer this time. Even though my son is 4, I still tend to carry around some items for him espeically on longer outings….snacks, water bottle, etc.

zoraneale :  I never carried one – my regular purse is a longchamp tote and I just use that with an organizing insert. After she was past the diaper blow-out stage I stopped keeping extra clothes in my bag and just keep an extra set of PJs in the car for emergencies. I also breasfed so I didn’t need extra space for bottles and formula. I don’t keep things like a thermometer and medicine with me unless she’s actively sick. I use multipurpose items to save space (like coconut oil – great as a nipple ointment, diaper rash cream, hand lotion, and lip balm in a pinch).  I always carried a water bottle and snacks for myself so now that she’s 1.5 we just share lol. I’m not big on bringing toys with me either – I’ll have maybe a book and some paper/crayons but that’s it – I’m really big on teaching kids how to be bored and to make their own fun with what’s around them. She’s an amazing creamer-pyramid builder already! Lol

But really – you don’t need much with you at all. Even times when I’ve thought “oh this random item might be helpful right now” I’ve never been in a situation where I couldn’t make do without it, go home to get it, or buy it. So long as you have the basics to keep the kid clean, changed, and fed you’ll be fine.

I use a backpack diaper bag everywhere I go for my 2.5 yr old.  If she didn’t have food allergies I may have stopped, but I always have diapers, wipes, epinephrine injectors, and safe snacks/drinks.  I usually also have hair ties and a comb, change of clothes, and some activities like stickers, colored pencils, or a book.

My baby is almost 9 months and I always have the diaper bag in the car. If we’re out running errands and he’s in the stroller I just throw it in the basket. If I’m just running in somewhere quick or we aren’t far from the car I don’t bring it in. I do take it into restaurants because it’s got his bib, wipes, table covers, sippy cup, etc.

OUr son is almost 7 months and I use it if we go someplace where I need a change of clothes, diapers, wipes, etc. If we are are running out for a short time and he won’t need to be fed or changed I might throw a diaper and wipes in my purse but dont bother with the whole diaper bag. Bottom line is it depends on where we are going and for how long.

I still do at 17 months. Only if we’re going out for awhile, like dinner or a long shopping day. It stays in the car most of the time, unless I think he’ll need some entertainment. It’s really only needed for peace of mind and long trips. If we hike, we shove it all in the baby backpack instead. I use a small purse so that method is no good for me.
