17.5 years. But I was never “waiting” and we lived happily together during that time and then decided that actually, we’d rather like to get marriew now. So we did! I would add that we are both older and have been married before so we were never going to be in a hurry.

3 months shy of 7 years. Had we been in a better position financially and in our careers, it would have been a couple of years sooner I think

@katydaisy: 7 years 4 months and 3 days!!! We started dating when I was still in high school. We waited until I finished my degrees and we got a house. Seemed like eternity.

He proposed this past June during our week long vacation, and we started dating July 2009, so almost 4 years. From about March onward was the hardest because I knew he purchased the ring since it was custom made and he kept asking me questions about what I want it to look like haha.
He actually had been planning the proposal for almost a year beforehand though! I was shocked when I finally got to read through all the emails between my best friend and him.

A little over a year. Enjoy the waiting period though! It’s so great to be waiting and anxious and knowing that the engaged day will come so soon!

9 years. We started dating when we were 19 and 20 so we didn’t even think about marriage for a long time.

We dated for over 4 years before he proposed.

3 months before our 4th year anniversary. However we started talking marriage within the first year. He was supposed to pop the question 2 x-mas’s before but we were tight on $$ and he wanted to get me the ring I wanted.

We started dating in April, and he proposed Christmas Eve that same year. By the time we get married though, we would have had a 16 month engagement.

3 years and 8 months…(so I voted 4 in the poll, rounding up)
From just before 3 years on, I was READY. I’m still not thrilled he waited so long (we were a bit older than the general crowd here when we started dating), but happy that we FINALLY got around to getting married.
If I had much say, we would’ve been engaged at 3 years.

@katydaisy: Not representative here, because he never popped the question, but we started ring shopping about this time of the year last year, that meant we were 6 months into our relationship (and 1 month after we moved in together). BUT, at first I just wanted us to have a ring, I didn’t think – yet – that I wanted to get married. So by the time we really decided officially, together, that we were getting married, it was 11 month into our relationship. I voted ”1 year” for this reason.
