- Wedding: August 2011
We’ve been engaged for 17 months already & by the time our October wedding happens we’ll have been engaged for 28 months! (2 years 4 months).
Originally I wanted to wait until I was finished college, which was this last June, but then I decided to pursue a Bachelor of Arts at University, which pushed back the wedding for another 4 years….and I decided a 5 year engagement was WAY too long to wait, so next October it is!!
It will be about 10 months. It was either that or 1.5 years, which we were not up for because his mother was really meddlesome when we first got engaged. There was no timeframe of 1 year, as it needed to coincide with my vacations(I am a teacher).
It’s looking like most people like to keep their engagement about a year long! I applaud of you girls that insisted on finishing their educations, despite wanting to get married sooner! I don’t know if I could wait for that! (Luckily I’m graduating this December so that won’t be in the way when I get engaged!)
Thanks for all the responses, bees! 🙂
I’m glad you did the poll too. I’m surprised at the results. I always figured they typical thing was December proposal for Summer wedding.
I think the reason must be none of my friends or family have ever been engaged for more than 1 year. I’ve never seen the engagement date pass. It’s really weird that i’ve only been exposed to the less than 1 year yet this poll is so varied.
Because of this, I’m biased. I sort of agree with your boyfriend.
So is money the only issue that would hold you up?
Also…I want to be honest with you…when i see some other engagement that has gone longer than a year, sometimes I wonder whether the guy really wants to get married or whether he just got engaged with no real plans just to keep the Girlfriend from nagging.
I find it weak if there is no plan. If money is an issue and it MUST go longer than a year…at least a real plan and a real date would be more meaningful in my mind (e.g. July 12 2012). If peope are afraid to “set a date” I wonder…
I was engaged 9 months to the day.
I think you can do whatever suits you, as long as you’re prepared to stand up for it. The second that ring is on your finger you’ll be barraged with questions about when/where/how you’ll be getting married. Seriously, I got engaged on Friday, and by Monday people were starting to nag me about not having things worked out.
As long as you guys are a unified front, and stand your ground you’ll be fine with a longer engagement 🙂
we will have been engaged for a year and 6 days when we get married. we chose the date because we knew we only wanted to wait that long.
but i think it depends on the couple. i have read a lot of posts from other bees that wait longer for reasons like you said (wanting more time to save, or some are still in college and want to finish first)
but whatever the reason just explain to him that you want time to save up enough money for everything.
like i know with FH and myself, we are paying for everything ourselves aside from 1,000 from his parents. it is a very big task. we will not have crazy amounts of money left when we are finished but we will have enough for everything we want for the wedding. (smallish wedding of 70 people tops and costing around $4,000-5,000 for wedding and honeymoon)
Five and a half months, give or take a week… The funny part about that is that my parents are baffled over why it should take us that long. His family is boggled over how short it is. Way to strike a happy medium!
We got engaged in August.
Ocotber: would have been ideal but not enough time.
Nov-Jan: Didn’t want to do because of the holidays (actually, I wanted January, but he said no because of all the snow last year).
February: is just a bland month to me, too random.
March: he was away for Army stuff.
April? April sounds good!! We’d dated 4 years, we’re in our mid/late 20’s and have enough family support (emotional and financial) to make this happen.
So, 8 months!
6 months 🙂
Ours will be 35 months… it’s agonizing! We got engaged right before Fiance started law school, and our wedding will be the month after he writes the Bar Exam. It has been long, but it worked out for the best – we are long distance this year, and I definitely would not have wanted to be long distance in our first year of marriage. Only 7.5 months to go!
we got engaged on april 11 and are getting married on april 2. so barely less than a year. and i feel like it’s the perfect amount of time–i wouldn’t have been able to plan the wedding in any LESS time.
Well be engaged for 23 months by the time we get married!
