Ugh, I had the night from hell yesterday. I was in the ER for 3 hours after having a 5 hour coughing attack with wheezing/shortness of breath and vomiting. I wouldn’t have wished what I was going through on my worst enemy 🙁
The doctor gave me a crap load of medicine plus the Z-pack for 5 days. How long do I need to use a backup method of birth control after I finish the pack? I asked the doctor and he said he didn’t know.

In the past I’ve been told to use back up methods for a week after finishing the antibiotic but I’m not a pharmacist so I have no idea how accurate that is.
I’m surprised your doctor didn’t look up the information if he didn’t know off the top of his head. I’ve never been told “I don’t know” by a doctor. If they don’t know, they’ll typically look it up. I would go to your local pharmacy and ask. I’ve done this before and they’ve always been willing to answer questions even if I’m not filling a prescription.
ETA: this site (http://m.netdoctor.co.uk/sex-and-relationships/medicines/zithromax.html) and a few others said you don’t need back up but I always ask a pharmacist anyways!

@MrsSweetT: from what I recall the z pack is a five day course but it stays in your system for 10 days so I would say I use backup for the entire duration of the pills as well as a week after. I read recently in Cosmo that it’s actually only a couple specific antibiotics that mess with the pill, but I would say take that with a grain of salt, better safe than sorry, Cosmo also seems to think that they reinvent oral sex every other issue.

Thanks for the reply ladies! I think just to be on the safe side, we’ll use condoms for the rest of my pill pack (3 more weeks), and I’ll skip the placebo week and go straight to a new pack.
