I apologize if this is a foolish question, but I know next to nothing about rings. SO has handled the entire choosing process from beginning to end and has told me bits and pieces of what it will look like. (Meanwhile, I’m sitting there saying – duhhh, what’s a halo?).
So anyway, SO says that he will probably be officially paying for the ring next month but it has to be custom made. It’s a very simple style. He asked one of his friends who went to the same jeweler how long it would take to make the ring, and his buddy said 2-3 days.
Is that realistic?? I’ve seen posts on here about rings taking up to a few months. Can someone clear this up for me? If it’s just a plain band with one diamond in the middle, could it really be as soon as 2 days?

Mine had to be custom made (it’s a solitaire) and the total time was approx. 6 weeks.

It depends on the jeweler and teh design, and whether he’s making it from a mold or from prefab parts. It is possible that it could take a few days. Mine took about two weeks when I had it made.

@mscuppycake: 6 weeks is realistic. Timewise it’s only take a few days but there’s a bunch of people ahead in the line! We ordered mine on the 27th of April and STILL haven’t got it 🙁

Mine is a solitaire split shank and will take around 3 – 4 weeks 🙂

My friend’s custom halo ring took 2-3 months.

It might only take 2-3 days of work to do the ring (though that sounds very short) but the jeweler will have other orders ahead of yours. I had my fiancée’s ring custom made, and the whole process took about 6 weeks.

Mine was custom designed by us with an out of town jeweler. We sent most of the materials and worked with him to design it. However, he had 2 significant health issues/accidents while he was working on it and it ended up taking 6 months to get the final product. My guy wouldn’t “pop the official question” until he had the ring so it felt like a very long process.

I’m not sure about 2-3 days. That sounds awfully short to me. Maybe it’s already made and it takes 2-3 days to get from where it is made/stored to the store? My ring took 6-8 weeks (it was around Christmas, so they were really overwhelmed). It had to be made for me.

I’ve been quoted 10 weeks…but I live in the UK and the ring will be made in the US and shipped over.
Also my design company send their designs to the manufacturer whi have a CAD team make sure the deisgns are suitable and check them over. So I guess that takes extra time?
Hope that helps? You could try maybe looking at your designers website if they have one and read up in their process.
However long it is, it still feels too bloody long haha!!

I am getting a custom halo ring made right now. I currently have a solitaire my fiance gave me so I could create my own perfect setting 🙂 Once the CADD (computerized drawing) is made and everything is approved and finalized- they said it will take 4-6 weeks to complete!

@mscuppycake: I’m having mine copied. It’s a cluster ring, with lots of pave-set diamonds.
The cast took about 2-3 weeks, as they had to take detailed measurements of my ring, input them into the computer, and make the wax mold, and then the platinum cast (which also had to be soldered together).
The diamonds have then taken about 3 weeks to set.
They said they could rush it, and with a simpler ring (ie not a replica, which is obv more involved, or something moe simple like a soliatire/triology/halo), they could probably have done it in 1 week max depending on the design (a soliatire would have taken a couple of days for eg)

I think it depends on the style and jeweler/how busy they are. I got engaged last week. Fiance had bought the stone separately and had the setting custom made from a jeweler in Los Angeles (we are in Canada). He paid for it on April 2, and got the ring May 31 (cut it very close to his proposal date).

The one I purchased is not full custom but does need a custom basket, as well as sizing of the ring and for the diamond. I paid on 6/ 12 and will be done on 7/1 so even partially prefab it takes some time surely due to other orders ahead of mine and gathering the stone setting and doing the actual work.

The ring we picked is made standard for a 1 carat center stone. Since our stone is slightly larger they are having to custom make it to fit our stone. He said to expect 2 – 3 weeks turnaround time. That is compared to the 4 – 6 week timeline I was given from a different jewlrey store on the same ring.
