How long did it take for your period to regulate after getting off birth control pills?
We are at the stages of discussing TTC and we decided the first time we’d be absolutely comfortable with a BFP is around November (we’d be thrilled with a surprise, but that’s most “convenient”). I’m going to the GYN in July but would like to get some of your feedback first.
When you would recommend going off BC?

My OB/GYN recommended that I go off BC one month before we wanted to start trying. I was surprised…I didn’t think it was enough time, and I had been on the pill for a long time. However, I finished my pills at the start of March and Darling Husband and I conceived in April. I think a lot of it depends on your own medical history. Good luck! 🙂

@Mars62312: I went off BC in early April. My first cycle off was 35 days – a little longer than average, but still within the realm of normal. I have been on BC so long I have no clue what my cycles used to be like – but I’m pretty sure they were probably a bit longer than 28 days even back then.
I couldn’t tell you how long my 2nd cycle off BC would have been since I got pregnant!
It’s really different for everyone though. I’ve heard of people getting back to normal right away, some take a year, some take a few months, some are regular for a few months then their cycle goes haywire.
FWIW though – we were very effectively using the pull out method (before I got pregnant) and the ONE time he did not pull out, we got pregnant! So, be careful! 😉 We’re in the same boat as you though – would have been more convenient to start TTC in september but were fine with any surprises that came! And really, how much of a surprise is it when you know you didn’t pull out?!
Some Drs say it doesn’t matter when you go off, some recommend having 1-3 cycles before TTC. It all depends on the doctor. Do what’s comfortable for you!

Thanks for the feedback! We just are both in a wedding in September and are taking a trip in October so we are hoping to be “free” those 2 months. I’ve been on BC since I was 18 with a few months off a few years ago. I didn’t get my period for 2 months during that time so I think I will need some time adjusting.

@Mars62312: It was recommended by my OB to get off the pill at least 3 months before actively TTC. I got off the pill in October, 2011 and my first period after off the pill was exactly after 28 days. They have been regular since then. Sometimes its off by like a day or two, but that isnt so bad. GL in your journey and FX you get your BFP in November, like you want! 🙂

Not trying to get prego but I’m not on HBC for medical reasons. I stopped in early January and basically bled for 4-6 weeks straight, then went almost two more months of no bleeding before I had a regular period. Now they’re regular again. So 3-4 months. In the past when I’ve gone of HBC it’s taken about the same time. good luck!! 🙂

My first cycle off the pill was 36 days, and went back to 28-29 days after that. I had been on the pill for 12 years, and had highly irregular periods before that.

Every single person is different. I however regulated right away.

I just ended my first cycle off of the pill. It was 45 excruciating long days! I had no idea whether I was KU or not since we were TTC, so I POAS everyday (sometimes a couple days per day) and was always dissappointed when I got a BFN. Anyways, my period just started today. My last period was on May 11. I am hoping after this cycle, they will start to regulate. We are also TTC so it is possible, I won’t have another cycle? LOL and then I will be in the same boat all over agian! I would recommend stopping BCP at least 2-3 months prior to TTC. Just to give your body time.
