@rawrrawr:  I don’t know that they would have 5 hours worth of music you would want to hear.  How about 2 or 3 sets lasting 30-45 minutes each with breaks in between each set for a DJ?

You should just ask them what the maximum time they’ll play for.  My husband is in a popular local band and they’ll play for 4 to 5 hours for weddings or occasionally at bars, but that’s definitely on the long side for them!

I’m currently getting quotes from different bands and 3 hours seems to be a popular time slot.

That’s fine by me. The way I see it, my ceremony starts at 5:30pm and will go to till 6pm, 6:15 at the latest. Followed by an hour of cocktail hour and then dinner, so the band will probably start playing at 8pm to 11pm, which is when my venue time block is up. So I think 3 hours is good. And since I wouldn’t need them for ceremony or cocktail hour, why pay for them to be there early?
