So I’m not sure if I’ll be DIY-ing my invitations, but I’m seriously considering it. I was wondering how long it took other bees from start to finish to do theirs. Including all design time and research. I’m a year out, so I have plenty of time, but when do I need to seriously start looking/designing them?

I started by attending a bridal showcase at a craft/scrapbooking store to get an idea of what was out there. I decided I wanted to do them myself and do embossing so I started collecting stamps and paper punches as well as other random supplies about 6 months before I made them. I made 40 invitations total and it took me a good week and a half from start to finish–probably 15-20 hours total including addressing the envelopes and everything. I started with 8 1/2 X 11 sheets of cardstock in my wedding colors that I ordered online and did everything myself. Including all the supplies, it cost me $120 which includes the invite, 2 envelopes, an RSVP card and a 2 sided wedding information card. Overall, it was worth it 🙂

@clane616: Thanks! I’ve looked at some invitations online, and it seems like my constant thought is “I like this one, but with that other (fill-in-the-blank-here)” I”m pretty sure Fiance is sick of hearing me say this. lol

Honestly, I think it’s really a matter of how fancy you plan on making them. I looked at a bazillion invitations on-line and in a stationary story. Either it wasn’t the right color or it wasn’t the right style. So I decided to just do it myself.
I’ve made the decision to go all out with the diy stuff. Like the previous poster, I’m embossing so figuring out the right equipment to get and finding the right stamp(s) took a little time effort. The other major part that’s taking so much time are the rsvp envelopes. I’m cutting them all out with a template and using the same color paper as some other parts of the invitation. Of course, I created a ton of extra work for myself, but I don’t really mind and I’m saving a bit of money (only about $40). I’m about half done and I think I’ve maybe put 15-20 hours into this. I’m going to say that I’m probably going to put another 10-15 hours into it, including addressing the envelopes.
Overall, I think it really depends on how much time you are willing to spend and how many invitations you are going to send. We are sending out roughly 250 invitations so I pretty much anticipated spending a long time on this.

@Kate2012: Thanks! I’m trying to get a couple different opinions so I can make sure to budget the right amount of time. I may start getting the design and everything down now, because I’m a little bit of a perfectionist and I’m way indecisive so I’ll need all the extra time I can get 🙂
