@MissCalifornia:  hi! Fellow Mirena user here. Yes, you are not alone. My first period after IUD lasted 26 days. I talked to my GYN about it and she said that’s normal: it can take up to 6 months for yourbody to get used to th IUD and your cycle will be all over the place.

Too Much Information: is it not like your regular period, is it more like that (forgive me) slush stuff you get right before/right after? It’s not the brilliant red like normal, is it? That’s totally fine, mine’s the same way. It’s like heavy spotting.

I know it sucks but it’s only temporary. Just keep telling yourself- 5 years of worry-free birth control!

Everyone’s different – I just had spotting for the first month or so and then nothing.  Pretty sure my doc said wait 6 weeks before you come back with complaints because everyone has issues at first… but that would be pretty annoying so I would call and check it out.

When are you going to see your man?

@MissCalifornia:  if you have a similar experience to mine, you should be ok after a few days with the man 🙂

I got the mirena put it close to six months ago, i always had regular 5 days periods. So after the IUD,  i was surprised my period lasted almost a month. I would bleed, than spot then go back to heavy. It was really annoying however now I haven’t gotten it in three months so it pays off in the end.

I guess I must have been weird! I bled for a few days after getting it put in, and then didnt have a period again until 3 years later when I had it removed! I hope it clears up and you get to have some fun!!

It’s been a few years since I got my Mirena, but I remember spotting for a long time. It wasn’t a real “period” or at least it didn’t feel that way. I spotted off and on for 4-5 months and then didn’t have my period for over a year and a half. I started getting my period again after having unprotected sex with my SO (I had never had unprotected sex with anyone else before this – the Mirena was/is an extra precaution on my part).

I only use panty liners now because when I get my “period” it’s suuuper light. Like using a tampon would hurt/be overkill.

I think the longer “period” is pretty common at first, especially since it sounds like it’s really light.

@MissCalifornia:  My doc said to give it 4-6 weeks to get through the annoying spotting, and she was right.  After that, it’s awesome!  My periods immediatly got super light (1-2 days) and after a year, they went away completely.  It’s awesome!  This will be my only BC from here on out.  It’s wonderful–I should have done it years ago.

so hang in there, and once your’re over the initial spotting, things will get back to normal.

I had the exact same thing. I was getting super annoyed because it lasted like 2.5 weeks of barely bleeding. I still spot here and there with small clots and I got mine back in September. It’s probably just being stubborn. It does get better though. I don’t even use anything for the clots because they’re really small.

My first period on Mirena was 2 weeks long! And heavy and really crampy for a week. UGH. Second one was 10 days, and then they were kind of normal for a while.

It’s been almost a year and now I’m pretty much getting some PMS, cramping and then… nothing. 🙂 It’s different for everyone, but you can pretty much guarantee that the first few months are all over the place.

    @Omgbunnies:  Exactly- gross “slush”

Although I have to say, despite the periods being gone the cramps are not, and they are worse than before. So for 3-4 days a month I’m in a fair bit of pain on and off >:O You can’t have it all, I suppose.

I got my Mirena in little over a month ago and bled for a long time!  I am on my cycle now still bleeding but a lot less.

Did anyone have extremely sore breasts? They feel lumpy and hurt especially after sleeping. They have grown in size too which I don’t like. Does this go away?

I got the mirena in 2008 after my daughter was born and truly don’t remember bleeding much then I got it taken out 4 years ago. Got it put in again on may 5 and started my period on the 15, now my periods normally only lasted for 4 days but now it 7th day and still heavy. Don’t know if I should be worried because I can’t Rembert if it was like this before.
