How many appetizers are you serving during your cocktail hour and how long is your cocktail hour?
My caterer is suggesting 6 different appetizers for a 1.5-2 hour cocktail hour.
We are having an open bar during that time….
I’m kind of thinking about doing 5 instead and wondering if it’s going to make that big of a difference (2 stations and 3 passed). Anywhere from 1-2 pieces per appetizer (which means, everyone will probably have 7-10 nibbles of something.
The cocktail portion will be followed by a seated dinner – if that makes a difference. I don’t want people to completely fill up on apps – I want them to eat their dinner!! 🙂

I am having a hour long cocktail hour and we are using three passed appetizers…

We had an hour-long cocktail hour with hosted beer, wine, and champagne. We had 3 different types of passed appetizers that were unlimited. Our guests RAVED about the food (appetizers and plated dinners). If you have GOOD food, then I don’t think you need that much variety. 🙂

On average, you’d want to do about 6 (combined passed/stationary). If you are doing less passed, have atleast 1 stationary so guess can nible throughout the night. In my opinion, 3 is too little (i’ve been to a wedding with 3 and it just wasn’t enough) but 5 may be ok.

3-5 pieces per person total is plenty, otherwise people will be too full to eat the dinner that is served afterward. 6-8 pieces per person of heavy appetizers (anything that isn’t a fruit platter, cheese platter, or finger sandwiches) is the equivalent of a full plated meal.
