@Lauraine:  the standard is 1 bottle of red for every 4 people and 1 bottle of white for every 5 people.

So, supposedly you should have 8 or 9 bottles of red and 7 bottles of white

I think it depends on whether your crowd likes to drink or not. Also, it depends on if you are serving other alcohol besides wine. Generally speaking, a bottle of wine serves 4-5 glasses, depending on size. At our wedding, we budgeted 4 drinks per person and that was close to accurate… some will drink more, and some less.

@Lauraine:  not really, considering a bottle of wine has 4 or 5 glasses in it, meaning 16 bottles would give you 64-80 glasses. That’s about two glasses of wine per person, which isn’t much for a celebratory evening. Of course, that assumes that everyone drinks. For dinner, that should be about right. Though, I don’t think people will necessarily complain if they only get 1 glass of wine with dinner, especially with the open bar before. didn’t know that 🙂 Two glasses per person would be better, but one is okay if you are on a tight budget.

Thanks for the info! Is there dancing etc with an open bar afterwards? We were told to budget 4-5 drinks per person over the whole night. This figure takes into consideration the people who are driving or not drinking for other reasons. Apparently some people will drink more than 4-5 drinks, hence the average. That was our average for 5-6 hours.

So I think if you say 1 drink per person per hour, and 4-5 glasses of wine per bottle, you will have enough.

If you are having an open bar as well as the wine at dinner, I think you could put the wine at the bar and have people ask for it. Or alternatively, have a waiter pour it at the table. That would cut it down a bit.

That sounds okay. You should probably find a way to let people know to bring cash to buy extra drinks if they want more than 2 glasses of wine. I don’t think you need to put it on your invites, but you could just spread the word through family/close friends.

@Lauraine:  I think that is more than enough especially for that time of day:)
