Fiance and I have decided to do cupcakes at our wedding instead of cake.
We have two options, either big cupcakes or minis. Right now we are leaning toward the mini cupcakes so that people can choose more than one flavor.
How many mini cupcakes will we need for 150 people?
Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Are you serving dessert other than the cupcakes? If you are serving dessert you’ll probably need less than 150. All the weddings I’ve been to serve dinner dessert and the wedding Cake was always barely touched at the midnight buffet. If you are doing mini cupcakes for dessert I would count on 1 to 2 per person.
Any great baker will be able to tell you exactly what to order based on your style of reception.

We had regular sized cupcakes and had 2 per person. We definitely had about 30 leftover so we didn’t need that many. But if you’re doing mini ones and having different flavors I’d think 2-3 pp if that’s the only dessert.

Mini cupcakes are 1/3rd the size of a standard cupcake. The rule of thumb 1.5 cupcakes per person for standard size. So for 150 people it would be 225 cupcakes. For mini that means 675.
If you are having other desserts you could cut it down to 1.25 standard cupcakes per person – so 188 standard or 564 mini. You would not want to do less than 1 per person standard. You might be able to get away with 2 to 2.25 per person mini if you have other desserts and a ton of other food.
ETA if you aren’t having other desserts and having more than one flavor, the guideline for standard cupcakes increases to 2 per person. Or 1.75 per person if you are serving a lot of other food. Apply the math accordingly for mini.

I am having regular cupcakes with no other desert… and My baker advised that I should plan to have 1.5 -1.75 per guest… so I’m assuming 3 to 4 per guest if they are Mini’s

We had standard cupcakes and had enough for 2 per person. We had some leftovers, but nothing crazy.

We are also doing cupcakes but will have a 1-tier cake for cutting as well. Our baker surprised us when she said to aim for about 4 pieces of dessert per person (but that includes dessert provided by your caterer as well). I’ve also heard from previous brides to order enough for about 75% of your guests if you have a separate dessert course (since not everyone likes dessert anyways).
We ended up ordering a mix of mini cupcakes and regular cupcakes for the mismatched look, but I think it will work out to be 1 mini cupcake and 1 regular cupcake per person. As well as the dessert through the caterer and a candy bar. And if there’s a lot of leftover cupcakes, I’m OK with that
