I ordered one per guest for my 200 person wedding, and we went home with more than half. We did have other desserts, so there were plenty of options, and I think that’s why.
The question is, are you having a dessert table with other options or just the cupcakes?

in one of my wedding guides, i think it was bridal bargains, they recommended ordering deserts for 80% of the guests, this was the same as the baker i spoke with at a bridal show.

I would rather overestimate than underestimate. I’m thinking 1 1/2 to 2 per guest. I don’t know what happened during our reception, but we ended up with less than enough cake for all of our guests. The venue had to offer cheesecake to several of our guests. I think this was because some people had seconds before others had been served.

We ordered 120 cupcakes for 75 people. We had about 20 left over. We bought chinese carry out containers in our color (from Michael’s) for people to take one home in, and I’m glad we did or I think we would have had more left over. Many people complimented us on the carry out boxes.

Haha…I just reread my previous post, and realized that I should probably clarify that when I said “if it lasts that long” I meant our cake topper, not our marriage! (I have a sweet tooth and might possibly indulge before our first anniversary). Secondly, although we had cupcakes (150 for 140 guests) and I said that we had plenty leftover I must also mention that, not only did we have a candy table but we also served dessert with our meal. I totally forgot because I was so busy that I didn’t even get a chance to try it 🙁 I was just looking through my pictures though and was reminded of the fact that we did have dessert.
I’d talk to your baker (if you’re going with one) and see what they recommend. Good luck!

@bissell: Haha, I went back to read your original post. Too funny!
Somehow I didn’t know about this tradition until my Future Mother-In-Law mentioned that we needed to get a small cake if we were doing cupcakes…I laughed and said, “You don’t really think cake is going to last that long in our house, do you?”

Holds p to 300!
I got one for my 175-200 person wedding, I never thought to order more than 1 per person though? hm
I was thinking of wrapping it with tool on the inside to take space up, but maybe I’ll need 300 cupcakes tof it! haha

We did mini cupcakes and it really worked out well – people got to try other flavors and there were no half eaten cupcakes. We did 3 per person and there were no leftovers (except the 2 I rescued and scarfed as they were cleaning up …)
