the uk is way beyond the us in this regard! there is no legal minimum here at a national level; a few localities (san francisco was the first) require a minimum number of paid sick days (7) for certain employers (it exempts small businesses), but that’s it. there are federal holidays, but companies are not required to pay employees during them.

at my old job, which was very generous in comparison to many other employers, i got 26 days that i could take as vacation or sick time on top of 11 paid federal holidays after i worked there for 2 years (before i got i think 22 days). i’m in grad school now so i don’t really get paid or get time off in the same way now

At one job I get no paid holidays, vacation, or sick time.  At my other job I get 5 days of vacation plus 2 paid holidays.

I get 3 weeks vacation plus like 7 federal holiday (I think it’s 7?) a year. It’s not that many days off. I live far from my family and really can’t visit often.

But… I would rather have the money than the vacations. I think Europeans get more vacation days, but they’re paid less in general because of it.

Technically I’m supposed to get 14 days total. So far though, since they made cutbacks and I’m the only one in my department, I haven’t gotten any and likely will not get any. I tried to take a sick day on July 5th because I was throwing up and ended up having to work from home from 8:30 to 5:30. So yeah, none. 🙁

I get 20 paid vacation days, 1 wellness day, 5 personal days, every 3rd Friday off (or can collect the lieu if I need it for some other time.)  And our boss gives us a “Boss Day” to take off anytime of the year as a Christmas gift.  We get 5 paid sick days, 5 at 75% pay, 5 at 50% pay.  We also get all stat holidays off.

I get 10 vacation days a year plus paid public holidays (like X-mas, Labor Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, etc).

It sucks!  Darling Husband and I live far from both of our family so by the time we are able to see them, there is very little time left for us to take time off together.

9 paid holidays (I think), 3 floating holidays, 14 paid vacation, 3 personal days, and we acrue sick throughout the year. You can’t transfer your personal or floating holidays from year to year, only sick or actual paid vacation. It’s not too bad. I work for the local gov’t so it’s better than average.

@SpecialSundae I could be wrong about that. I think your items are taxed higher to provide for more benefits, which makes everything more expensive. Like gas, or food or clothing. When everything costs more, you should make more money or your salary doesn’t keep up with the cost of living.

At least this is what I get from my friends living overseas.

I get every other Friday plus & Holidays. I’m off 35 days a year.. more if I request time off. Wow, I never realized how much down time I have.
