Has anyone tested their cars gas capabilities to the max? Before ya’ll jump down my throat and tell me to not risk it, I work in a not great part of town and the closet gas station is in a VERY bad neighborhood. I’m 7 months pregnant and afraid to make the trip over there. Having pregnancy brain, I didn’t realize how low I was on gas until my light clicked on as I pulled into my work parking garage. My car tells me I have 10 miles left. I am about 20 miles away from a nicer gas station. When your car tells you you have “x” amount of miles left until empty, do you assume you have a couple more miles after it reaches 0? I’ve never run out of gas before in all 14 years I’ve been driving (knock on wood), so I really have no clue. All I’m going off of is that Seinfeld episode when Jerry and Kramer do some test driving 🙂 Anyone have any experience with this?

KateByDesign: My light comes on when I still have an 1/8th of a tank, so quite a ways. Heh. My van also has a DTE thingy and it’ll flip flop from 2 to 0, back to 2, back to 0. I can still go at least 5 more miles after that. But I try not to do that because it’s so bad for your engine. It kicks up all the sludgy crap at the bottom of your tank. I’d get as close as I could to the good section of town and stop there. Or if you can, ask somebody at work to please take a little trip to the gas station with you. But honestly, those gauges aren’t all that accurate. Sometimes I drive 10 miles and that gauge only tells me I’ve lost 2 DTE miles…

My first light goes on when I hit 80km, then the second light goes on again at 50km and stays on until I fill it up. I can go around 25km (not sure what that is in miles) after it hits 0.

Mine has a light that comes on at around 1/8 of a tank. I have never run my current car that low on fuel because it would cost over $100 to fill up and I’d be sitting at the gas station forever, lol. Usually there will be at least a few more miles left before it reaches “empty,” so I wouldn’t worry about it too much if I were you. You could probably make it to the good section of town without a problem.

My car doesn’t “tell” me how many miles I have until empty, the light just comes on. I’ve heard (possibly old wives tale) that cars can go 30 miles past the light, but I bet that varies wildly from car to car. I might go 10, possibly 15 miles after the light turns on.

Mine goes about 30 miles at highway speeds, but I wouldn’t assume any more than that! I’m very fearful of breaking down on the road..

i think it depends on your car. I drive a brand new jetta, which has one of those digital gas gauges, and when the last line disappears, it dies instantly. When its out of gas, its out, there is no leeway. With older model cars, you do have some leeway. Once my gas light comes on, i have exactly 40 miles until the car will die.

My fuel needle sticks. I can remember leaving work for home (it’s about 65 miles) and thinking I had a third of a tank. By the time I was about 30 minutes from home (just over half way), the light was flashing a fandango on my dash and the needle was pointing to “empty”.
I literally managed to pull up to the petrol station, having pulled off the motorway ASAP, when the car stuttered and died. I think I made it around 25 miles but most of that would have been on fumes. The car stopped just short of the pump and it was a choice between pushing the car the extra foot and dragging the extra long hose around. The hose just managed to fit. That’s cutting it about as fine as it gets. My tank has a 60 litre capacity, and I filled it with 59.8 litres that day.
So yeah… I know pretty precisely. Never again. I now always fill when I’m down to half a tank.

Thanks ladies…I think bringing someone with me to the bad station during my lunch break might be my best bet. It’s such a trek out to my parking garage but I really would rather not risk it after work at rush hour!

50ish miles, according to my “miles to fill up” thing on my car. i never trust it though. once the gas light comes on, i go get gas. Fiance let it get to 30 miles left, and the gas gauge light started blinking at me while i was driving to the gas station. not fun.

When mine comes on I assume I have about 20 miles left. However, my light has only ever come on once. I’m super paranoid about running out of gas so I rarely let it get below a quarter of a tank.
Good idea bringing someone with you! I would be nervous my entire drive home if my light was on!

My car has an 18-gallon tank, and the light comes on when there are 2 gallons left. I drive a Camry so I get decent gas mileage; the furthest I’ve pushed it after the light comes on is 40 miles or so.

I have an older car so it just has a low fuel light, and not something that tells me how many miles are left, I haven’t tested extactly how far it’ll go before it stops but we’ve gone 25 miles after the light popped on and she was still runnin like a champ.

It’s never happened on my personal cars, but I had a car at work once that it happened to us on. It came on about 60 miles before empty. So it said anyway!

My light goes on at 50 miles DTE; the lowest I’ve let if go was around 20 DTE and that made me nervous.
