I have no idea where to even start with this. We are having our reception in a church gym. It is pretty big with super high ceilings. In an attempt to take some of the gymie feeling out of the room we are putting up colored paper lanterns. We are going to be stringing fishing line or something simlar from the basketball hoops then hanging the lanterns on there. I realize that this will vary based on how much coverage we want and the size of the lanterns etc but I am wondering what other people have used or any insight into how many of these things we need. How many lanterns and what size have you all used or are planning on using. Any pictures to go along with numbers would be great too. Thanks!

first look at your square footage and then decide how thick you want the coverage! i’ve been looking at using them too but am still stuck – i think since you’re in a gym you could go fairly large, maybe around 20″?

Like you said it does vary greatly. If you use really big ones interspersed with medium sized ones, I found that it makes it look like there is more (we used this for a friends wedding I was in). Also, maybe you could do lines of lanterns instead of randomized all over the ceiling. that way you would know exactly how many you need.
For my wedding we had a tent and hanging them all over wasnt an option so we strung from each corner up to the center of the tent, it looked good! (i think)

Just did my daughter’s wedding reception in our church gym.
We decided to make it tent like and hung gossamer from a frame my hubby made.
It took 300 yards of gossamer to cover the whole gym the way we wanted but looked amazing.
I then hung paper lanterns from the center
we used about 20, varying sizes and colors (orientaltrading.com). they had metallic silver ones that were awesome and we used the other colors in my daughter’s wedding.
we also rented uplights (again, online!!) for the walls to wash the gossamer in color.
We have gotten many nice comments on her reception. 🙂

Do you by any chance have any pictures of how it came out? Also, how long did it take you to get that all set up?

Just had my daughters wedding and in a tent we had almost 150 lanterns—a lot of work –but they looked amazing!

I used Mrs. Tiramisu’s blog post as a guide. Our tent is 40×60 (I think) and I bought 60 lanterns in two different sizes.

We had a 60 x70 tent and strung 70 lanterns throughout. I did all different sizes, ranging from 12″ to 24″. It kind of depends on the look you’re going for– uniform, or more scattered. I got our lanterns from paperlanternstore.com

We used about 35 paper lanterns. But we just had them clustered over the dance floor. They were various sizes and at different heights. It took like 45 mins to hang them all. This is the best picture I could find right now. (dont mind the pink chairs, this is before the chair covers were put on )

It had a really neat tent-like feel. We did not cover the ceiling completel so that A/C ducts weren’t blocked!! The center piece was solid.
We spent a couple of days, but it could be done probably faster, since we were only able to really work on at night. It took us longer because we also wanted to cover the walls in the gym (the walls were brown carpet). But hanging the gossamer and the pieces that we attached to the wall..probably 8-10 good hours.
Was easy to take down and we packaged it all up in case someone wanted to use it there again.

Pics……at last! It really made a splash apparently—people are still talking about how beautiful the reception was—nearly 3 weeks later!
