I only met with one, but that is because I was in love with her work.  I knew her price was right and she was available for our day, so I was basically just meeting with her to see if our personalities would mesh.  If you like all 5, I think it is a good idea to meet with each of them.  You may learn you want to work with all of them, or only one.  Who knows?  I think it is really important that you make sure you can work with/get along with this person since they are playing such an important role.

We did all our negotiating over e-mail, narrowed it down to 4-5 choices, and then used this matrix I created to spit out which photog was the best value for our money based on the factors most important to us.  That gave us the top choice and we met with them and booked them.

It seems, based on my experience as a photographer, the answer is usually 1 or many. Many couples select their photographer by word of mouth from other weddings and do not even consider others. Then there is the other extreme that seem to meet or at least talk to everyone in a 50 miles radius! Both are completely acceptable. These photographs can not be retaken. Pick the person you are most comfortable with and can afford.

I wanted to add that 5 photogs is probably not that many.  I’ve met with several florists.  We just didn’t need to for the photog and same thing with the videographer.  I don’t want to go to that many meetings!

One and done.  Once I saw our photographer’s work I knew it was exactly what I wanted for my wedding photos.

As a photographer, I appreciate it when my clients narrow it down a bit more before asking to meet with me, ESPECIALLY when they are asking me to drive anything more than 15 minutes to do so. I also live in a remote area, though, so meetings almost always involve a lot of driving.

    None.

I emailed about 10-15, narrowed it to a few from there, asked advice here, narrowed it some more and ended with THE one. He’s currently located across the country so we didn’t have a chance to meet in person, but we have e-mailed at length and talked on the phone. I know we made the right choice.

I only met with one – I narrowed it down to someone I KNEW I loved before I set up a meeting!

I looked at about a million blogs, shot for my favorite, and it just so happened that we really clicked, she was in the budget, and was also available. I think you’re smart to meet with 5! It’ll really give you a feel for who’s personality works with yours, and what the styles/prices are. I think we got really lucky.

I only met with one (destination type wedding) and loved him and his assistant 🙂

I also had narrowed it down a lot before the meeting

I knew who I wanted when I saw my friend’s photos from her wedding a couple years ago. I didn’t even bother meeting with anyone else. He’s not exactly a bargain, but worth every penny, it’s my splurge!

We met with 2. Didn’t like the first one, fell in love with the second one 🙂

    @PassionatePhotoLady: Totally agree with you.

As a vendor I LOVE to meet with potential brides, but it’s definitely rough when you know that you’re one of several in that category that the bride is meeting with.

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t explore all your options and contact as many people for prices as you can.  Options are fabulous!!

I think that you can get a good feel for a photographer’s work from their website, a feel for them as a person through e-mails or phone conversations, and narrow down the list from there.

A lot more goes into a client meeting than just showing up to the place.

Having 5 photographers in your final list of “may be the one” isn’t bad at all, but try to narrow it down a little more before you meet with them in person.

After all, that’s five meetings you have to make time for in your schedule and each one could last upwards of an hour.

Try a couple of phone calls first.  If the person won’t make time in their schedule to talk to you on the phone…then that’s a good indicator right there!

    Good luck with the search.
