Just a curiosity post to see if there is a “norm”..
I am trying to stick to a budget to start a good savings cushion prior to marriage. (Hopefully will be getting engaged over the next few months!) For reference: I live alone, rent an apartment and live in a larger city. It’s really easy to fall into eating out for lunch a few times a week and especially picking up a quick dinner on my way home. SO and I only eat out once or twice a week usually for date night.
I have started to budget my groceries pretty well (between $25-45 a week) but looking at my bank account I see that eating out adds up so quickly.
So.. how often/ how many times a week do you eat out?

Typically once, every now and then we might go twice. But typically we go out to dinner on Saturday nights. I enjoy cooking so I make homemade meals the other six days out of the week.

We eat out for a date night once a week if possible. Fast for I plead the 5th.
It is expensive to go out a lot. I have been so busy and we both like variety so I’m trying hellofresh.Com meals to see if we can save money over restaurants but it seems to be about the same

$25-45 a week for groceries, I wish LOL I spent that a DAY minimum for the 2 of us 😐 I also eat lunch out 3-4 times a week and at least once a week for dinner.

Normal is relative. We’re out several times a week sometimes, but it’s not linen table cloths and candlelight.

futuremrscrow: Lol… ALDI!! Eggs, coffee, fruit, sandwiches/salads. Nothing super exciting but it makes going out to eat a lot more enjoyable lol

We only go out maybe once a week, sometimes not at all! My husband tends to get coffee at least once or twice a day (so probably $20-$25 a week in coffee). My parents own a restaurant and usually that’s where we’ll go because we get 50% off. We only go to other restaurants on special occassions, when we’re out of town or if we’re with friends (so 1-2 times a month depending on the month).
ETA: We do spend A LOT on groceries. Like $600ish a month. Groceries are expensive in Canada, and we eat clean, lots of veggies, etc. So… that’s where our priorities are. Adding eating out on top of that kills our budget!

petitebee08: This week four times but it’s been a busy one. We haven’t even reached the weekend yet! But usually once a week for dinner. When we’re saving we’ll aim for once or twice a month. It depends on your income as to whether it makes a dent.

Before I lived with my husband, I ate out waaaaay too often. I really love to cook, but cooking for one is a pain. Now I go home for lunch most days, and we rarely eat out more than 2x/week. Usually it is just once a week – for a date night. Then sometimes we’ll go out for lunch. He works from home, so we have “lunch dates” every day unless one of us has a meeting or something.
We usually spend about $100-150/week on groceries, but we buy lots of fresh produce and meats.

We eat out/get take out (from local restaurants not like Chinese) 5-6 nights a week. It’s rare that we will cook. Plus yummy leftovers can count as a second night sometimes lol. Sure it’s more money but it saves us so much time and we get to decide on what we feel like eating every night! I mean what if you just don’t want what you bought to cook? We have wasted too much food that way so now we know better ha.

petitebee08: we’ve cut waaaaaaaaaaaay back on eating out because 99% of the time it was out of sheer laziness. Ordering a pizza isn’t really that much easier than scarmbling up some eggs for dinner when you’re tired and it’s faster, cheaper, and healthier. We weren’t getting any additional enjoyment out the added expense. My husband isn’t 100% on board and will get lunch out at work 1-2 times a week, but at least he works in a neighborhood with cheap options he likes (he’ll spend an average of $3, where I would spend at least $9 on lunch). We aim for 1-2 dinners out a month for dates.
ETA: I’ve noticed that we’ve gotten fatter as our grocery/restaurant budget has expanded too. That’s been another motivator for us to go back to eating like we’re broke – we need to lose weight! I never did ramen and “cheap” crap even at my brokest, but in season veggies, oatmeal, rice and beans, eggs, and all that sort of stuff is cheap, yummy, and kept me skinny once!

petitebee08: Once, MAYBE 3X a week. We usually go out to eat on Friday nights (like tonight!), and then sometimes once during the week if we’re out running errands.
But, usually Saturdays are out to eat too… but that usually means ordering food in – especially if were at his sister’s place. Or, just getting something to eat on our own, or depending on what’s going on… college alum football game so we’ll go out afterwards, etc.
So, mainly Friday and Saturdays. I tend to bring my own lunch during the week, but Darling Husband will stop by somewhere or make something at home.

Way too often! We do date night once a week, but Darling Husband eats lunch out a few times a week, and then we both cave in and pick up dinner 2 or 3 times otherwise. It really does add up quickly! Especially if one or both of you enjoys adult beverages.
