Hello all! So, if I’m estimating about 40 people total to my destination wedding but only around 25 are drinkers… how much alcohol do you think will be enough for my cocktail hour after the ceremony and reception? Oh, I am allowed to bring my own and I just pay the corkage fee. Thanks in advance!

it depends how long your reception is. our calculation was for every drinker, 6 drinks (2 for the cocktail hour, 1 for every hour after). our guests are pretty split between beer and wine drinkers with very few mixed drinkers, so our type of alcohol is split about 40% wine, 40% beer and 20% mixed drinks.
hope that helps! i would ask your caterer for help, too.

http://www.evite.com has a great drink calculator that lets you say how many people you’re having, how long the party is, what type of drinkers will be present (light, medium or heavy) and what type of alcohol you’re serving. I haven’t tried it yet but the estimates seem reasonable.

and FYI, on evite.com the calculator gives 1 drink per hour if you put it on the "medium" setting. as mentioned, that is the general rule that most people use–about 1 drink per hour.
