The thought of paying for a DJ is driving me nuts; esp. coming from a family with about every other cousin/uncle being a DJ! But I knew it would be a “problem” since it was one of the FEW cons of our venue. We have to choose a DJ from their pre-approved list 🙁  Which probably means there isnt room to “negotiate”rates since its off-season. Of the few DJs on the list, we’ve heard GREAT things about one in particular, but reading that someone paid $1500 for 4.5hours 3 YEARS ago really discourages me! BAH!

We are paying $850 for 6 hours in Charleston, SC with just basic lighting. Prices I found by phone ranged from $550-$1000 depending on experience and equipment.

Vancouver prices are 1000. If you can find one for 800 you’re lucky.

In Chicago most of the prices I saw were anywhere from $1000 to $5000/$6000 when you get into all the schmancy upgrades. I’m probably going with a guy my Future Sister-In-Law knows who dj’s on the side for much much less, about $500, for the ceremony and reception (6 hours). I was a little nervous (you get what you pay for y’know) but she has nothing but positives to say about him, and since we’re also having a band it would be nice to save a little here. I’m going to check him out at a party she’ll be at this weekend and see if he’s a cheese ball or not. Maybe think about checking out your contendors some night before deciding. They should be cool with it. A lot of times they work events other than weddings that would be easy to pop in on.

We are paying $895 for 6 hours. Not to bad, but we are also having live music which was $800. They don’t split the cost even though they will be spliting the time!!!!

I’m paying $550 for the reception, $350 for the ceremony, $75 for a cocktail hour speaker w/ipod, and $100 for 10 lights of uplighting so $1075 in total.  I actually found a few DJ’s for cheaper but I wanted a DJ that would be able to play (and understand so I don’t have to do all the playlists!) Hindi/Bhangra/Bengali music.  I’m in the Los Angeles area.

We’re in the Philadelphia area and still looking for a DJ.  Like you said the prices range from $575 to well over $1,000.  Most of our friends spent around the $1100 to $1300 mark and to be honest, I’ve hated those DJ’s.  All they do is TALK TALK TALK.  I refuse to pay someone to TALK TALK TALK.  I want to hear music.  GOOD MUSIC at a reasonable price…like under $800.  Is that so much to ask?
