I’m considering buying a new bag and a new trench coat – both designer items that are relatively expensive – my SO isn’t exactly thrilled with the price, but I’m honestly in love with them, and the cost isn’t something we cannot afford (and I don’t often splurge!)
He said that he would never spend more than $200 on a single item of clothing etc. because he thinks it’s unnecessary, where as I would happily spend up to $3,000 depending on the quality and the exact item (I wouldn’t spend $300 on a singlet, or $100 on a single pair of underwear, for example).
So Bees, how much are you willing to spend on one item of clothing, pair of shoes or accessories? What are your reasons behind your dollar limit?
And, just because they’re gorgeous:

On a ‘regular’ item (ie not wedding related) up yo $200 and it would probably be a coat or posh frock

@Mischka: for me it depends on what the item is.
Purse: $200-$300 (i have to really love it to spend that much)
Clothes & Shoes: No more than $100 for one item
I am not made of money, so I cant justify spending more than that one those items without feeling guilty.
Outerwear (coats, jackets): $300
I shop a lot but I am a bargain shopper. I try to go to the outlets so i can get great deals. Or if i have coupons or shop of sale days. Its not that Im cheap but I have bills to pay, so I have to shop smart

Those are gorgeous pieces! Both staples and both are stylish without being too trendy. You’ll use them for years so worth the price. $500 would be my max right now but I would happily spend way more if we weren’t making an offer on property today.
What is that trench coat? It’s amazing!

Shoes, clothes, 100. Coats, 300. Handbags, 2000.

@Mischka: Hmm, tough question because for me it all depends on the item. I voted $200, and I can’t even see myself spending that much on most stuff. I’m also not really a shopper though.
Purse: $50 at most.
Shoes: $200 because prices for decent quality shoes are not low.
Outerwear….: The winter coat I want is over $600 which bugs me but even the others cost around $400 so I figure I’d might as well get the one I want. The only issue now is that I can’t find the colours I want, so I will probably wait until next year.

I cannot see myself spending more than $200 on anything. I have no need to spend that kind of money chasing my girls around. Of course if my husband buys a new suit for work, that would be something different.

I voted $2,000. There are a few things that cost more than that and I really would love to have them but I can’t justify buying (a Chanel bag is one). I will spend up to $2,000 on a bag….$1200-1500 on shoes…and probably no more than $800 on clothes (a coat).

I wish you put “Under $100”.
I try not to spend over $20 for an article of clothing. Unless it is of quality. I go to sales, clarences. I am frugal with money. I don’t see the point of splashing $$$$$ on clothing because it’s “brand” or “Designer” name unless it is on sale.
Confession, I will be happy to go to charity shops and fork out money on good quality second hand clothes.
Unless there is a planned outfit I will set money aside.

I only spend good money on shoes and purses – and for me that is $200 or less.
For general clothes, I’d say no more than $50 usually, maybe up to $75 for a good pair of dress pants.
I live 10 minutes from an excellent outlet mall, so pretty much everything comes from there.

Does your wedding dress count? If so – my range is considerably knocked up. Otherwise it would probably be 500- only because I have spent a huge sum and gotten years of use out of an item before, so in my experience it was an excellent investment.

I don’t like to spend more than $100 on a single item of clothing and usually the most I spend is $98 on new lululemon pants 😉 I’d spend between $100-$200 for something really special or a nice pair of shoes/boots or a purse. Typically my clothing items are between $40-$75.

@Mischka: if it will literally last forever (durable materials, timeless design, a classic) then id spend up to 3k
it would have to be an item that the “price per wear” would get way down eventually. Bags boot suits and coats are example of items like that So you have my approval 🙂

$200 is my max and that’s pushing it
