Fiance doesn’t own a suit, and it’s high time we got him one, especially with the wedding this year. We’re looking at getting him a navy slim-fit suit with a vest, because he loves the look. Neither of us have any idea what we should look to spend on something like this, though. Also, Fiance is tall (6’5) and thin, so that’ll probably haeve an effect on where we can look and cost.
Anyone have any suggestions of price points or good places to look?

With the suit, shirt and tie came to just under $400. It’s come in handy since it’ll be his suit he wears to our wedding and to another friends last year. We call it his wedding and funeral suit…

@alysee: I see that you’re in Canada as well–may I ask where he bought his suit? 🙂

We bought it at Sears last fall. I’m not sure where you live but if you are in the GTA you should check out the Eaton Centre Sears for deals, since they are going out of business, and everything is on sale.

I actually just ordered a $990 suit for only $100 off of eBay from a reputable seller in the united states. Seller name is sclassbound and they are having a discount sale right now on their regular prices. They do seem to have only Jos A Bank suits and they look genuine and good quality.

We got a 3 piece suit, shirt, tie, and belt (yeah my husband doesn’t dress up much!) at a 50% off Men’s Wearhouse sale for about $425. With free lifetime alterations.

@alysee: We’re in Winnipeg, so unfortunately that’s not an option, but we hadn’t thought of checking Sears! Thank you for the suggestion 🙂

@MrsRevolutionize: We got H’s suit at Kohl’s! It was the Marc Anthony line of clothing. H is slim and his suit and pants were a very modern slim cut. 100% wool too! I think we got his suit, new white shirt, silver tie and silver hankie fir $255 total. I got the suit and matching hankie at Men’s Warehouse though. He always hates how he’s swimming in dress clothes, but these new “slim fit” styles are made for him.
Kohl’s is online too. Sears is in the same category as Kohls I think, so that is a good place to look too.
(We went to Men’s Warehouse first, but we did not like their prices and how you had to come back when a tailor was there to get the pants finished off. We needed to have a suit ASAP.)

@MrsRevolutionize: check out perry ellis, we got the pants for 69.50 and the jacket for… I don’t recall and the tag is gone. Maybe 140 for the jacket? We bought his at dillards, but his gm were able to get it direct from the perry ellis website on sale for even less. He has some great slim cut stuff and talls

@sienna76: Kohl’s is actually a decent option for us, as we live within driving distance of a US store. Maybe we’ll plan a weekend out of it sometime soon. Thanks for the suggestion! 🙂

@MrsRevolutionize: My Fiance swears by Hugo Boss suits. They’re well-priced and excellent quality.. the fit is also great.
His next choices would be John Varvatos or Burberry, but they cost approximately double the price of a Hugo suit.. which is about $900 I think.
A cost effective alternative to Hugo is Strellson, which was started by the former Hugo Boss founders. So you get a similar fit/ quality for a cheaper price point. My Fiance has not tried them, but I’ve heard good things from his tailor.

@MrsRevolutionize: We bought his custom made white linen suit through studiosuits.com for $160 including shipping. They offer lots of different styles and materials. We found the company pleasant to work with and his suit looked great!

Depending on when you can catch sales, outlets can be a great place to find a suit. We got FI’s suit at Neiman Marcus outlet for $450 which was 50% off. My brother has gotten a three piece suit from a Jos A Bank outlet for $150 (I think retail was $650). We are going to look at suits at a Jos A Bank outlet for the groomsmen probably around July 4th when there is usually a big sale.

@MrsRevolutionize: Fiance didn’t have a “good” full suit either.
For our Engagement party (and he’ll wear the same thing but a different shirt/tie for the wedding) He bought the pants and jacket seperately. Which is something you may want to consider, since your Fiance is so tall and slim.
My Fiance is on the other end of things and is fairly short (also slim). He had to go to a Men’s clothing store that caters just to men who are less than 5ft 5″ for his pants. From what I recall, they were about $500.
He also had to get a custom shirt, because his neck size is larger than his body size, so he cant buy off the rack because if he gets a shirt that fits his body he can’t do up his top button, and if he gets a shirt that fits in the neck, his body is swimming in material, his shirt cost just under $200.
He bought a Black Velvet Jacket for $750, which was 50% off of the orig. price.
So all in (not even counting the tie he wore — OR his shoes!) Fiance spent about $1450. Which is crazy! But since he can’t buy anything off the rack (without alterations), in terms of dress clothes, he expected to spend quite a bit. He’s also really picky and knows what he likes, so throw that into the mix of specality stores and you end up dropping quite a bit of cash.
He looked at his suit as an investment though, because he’ll wear it a bunch of times over, so if you think of it as a cost per wear thing, its not bad to spend more up front for quality and what you want.

Suit and accessories, my Fiance paid about $1200. Tailored and made in Italy.
