I had a more trendy look in mind than the classic three piece suit so we bought all the pieces for his suit from a variety of places. We lucked out and got a lot of things on sale so including shoes DH’s entire outfit came to less than $220. We got the jacket from JC Penny, shirt and tie from H&M, pants from ASOS, and shoes from 6pm.

@Duncan:  maybe, but it was also about fit. He’s a odd shape, and nothing was looking good enough UNTIL we went to recongnized brand names and even then there was only 1 brand that fit which was Boss.

@vmec:  For his next suit, in that price range, go have Blair Shapera, on Smithe, make him one.  He made this jacket and pants for my dad, for $1300:

@Duncan:  We had odd experience with custom tailors. All the ones we spoke to said that their suits still have to fit “the brand”. I wanted an slim fit, which custom tailors just kept saying that it will fit PROPERLY (as opposed to the non-standard extra slim fit that was desired.)

Either way, we paid the same as you paid, and got what we wanted, and we were happy with the purchase at the end of the day. For suits like alot of things: you get what you pay for.

@MrsRevolutionize:  If you’re looking for places in Canada, my Fiance bought a beautiful suit at Harry Rosen in Toronto (but it looks like they have stores all over the country). It was on the pricy side ($1400, gray Armani) but the quality and rewear value made it worth it for him. Plus, it was a gift from his parents, so that made it even better 😉

    Good luck!

I’m hoping it won’t cost more than $500 but time will tell.

I think it was about $800 (after a discount). We wanted to get him a good quality, tailored one. It looked really good on him, and I figured why would we spend thousands on a dress I will wear once but not shell out for a good quality suit he will wear multiple times?

@vmec:  Most made to measure suits, even at custom tailors, are sent out.  Made to measure, itself, is a pattern that is adjusted to the person’s measurments, so it still needs to be a cut that fits you.  My dad’s were made to measure, but were done in his shop, by his cutters – I saw it in various stages of construction, whereas most come finished from China or Montreal.  A bespoke suit is a pattern designed for you, and is more expensive, obviously.  Anyway, Blair is, from my research, and everyone I’ve spoken to, in real life, and online, the best tailor for hundreds, and hundreds of miles.  I’d definitely check him out next time; if he can do the shape you want, which he probably can, especially if you have an example of what you want, which you now do, you’ll get higher quality per dollar.
