Well talking from my brothers engagement party (I still haven’t had mine), for 120ish guests he and his partner got about $7000. I guess that’s how it is when you have a lot of close family and friends.

Oh and I should add that money went towards their honeymoon. Where we are from people generally give money over gifts because it’s much easier.

Our engagement party is TONIGHT! We made no mention of gifts on the invite and when people asked us what we wanted, we insisted that there was no need to bring a gift however all of them were like “Ofcourse we’re going to bring a gift – or would you prefer cash??”

It’s amazing how many people want to just give us cash or asked us if we had a “wishing well”

@lifesaver08:  My parents were the same though, I think they think this is a great opportunity to get gifts or cash but that’s not what it means to us – it’s about celebrating our engagement!

Wow! I didn’t have one because I felt it would be gift-grabby of me, seeing as there’s no need to celebrate the wedding before the wedding when we’re going to celebrate the wedding at the wedding (the reception). If I had had one and had been as gift-grabby as possible about it, there is no way it would have come close to funding the wedding.

An engagement party is not a gifting event in my social circle. We had a couple of people bring bottles of wine, but the particular people who did so do that for every party including casual afternoon barbecues. I have never seen people bring gifts to any of the engagement parties I’ve attended. It’s just to get together and give everyone from both sides a chance to meet each other before the wedding. Ours was a lot of fun and was the first time our families had met (his lives out of state). But no gifts were involved or expected.

Yeah I’ve always thought of a nice bottle of wine/champagne or some small monogrammed home good (e.g., picture frame, toasting flutes) as the appropriate/accepted engagement party gift. Never heard of giving/expecting cash in my social circles…

At our engagement party, we got a token statue from my aunt, and a whole bunch of cards. Perhaps a bottle of wine or two. Nor were we expecting anything (like, really truly, not in a “we weren’t expecting but thought there might be” way.) Definitely not a money-making experience. Gifts are definitely NOT expected at an engagement party in my circle.

@weddingmaven:  I should clarify #30 to say that most gave checks for the wedding itself but  I never got any checks or cash at all for an engagement gift.    People do bring nice gifts to engagement parties, a step above shower but not as expensive as a wedding gift.  Examples would be  appliances, trays, serving dishes, linens etc.  Never cash, though.

Didn’t have an engagement party.  If I were invited to one, I’d probably bring a (nice) bottle of wine or champagne and a card.

I didn’t have an engagement party or bridal shower

I never heard of anyone besides family gifting cash for an engagement.

I’ve never heard of people paying for a wedding with the engagement party. I’ve actually only heard of people gifting cash at the wedding. Mostly at engagement parties I see people give bottles of wine, engraved picture frames and other gifts for the home.

Um, we made nothing…(we did not have one)

Engagement parties aren’t fundraisers. I have never, ever heard of them making a profit. Your parents are wrong!

I think it’s more common in Australia to give gifts or cash at an engagement party. I’ve given cash to all of the engagement parties I’ve attended and we received around $1000 from our family and friends, which we did NOT ask for or expect. Our engagement party was really just an opportunity for our families to meet.

We didn’t have an engagement party, but we did take immediate family out for high tea when we made the announcement. In the weeks following, I was stunned and so grateful and overwhelmed when gifts/money/gifts cards arrived from family and friends. None of it was expected and all of it was given despite us not hosting an official engagement party.
