Just one thing to keep in mind – not sure how many heat cycles she has had, but spaying before she goes into her 2nd heat still offers some protection against the development of mammary cancer later in life. Dogs typically go into heat every 6 months. Even if the SPCA is willing to spay her during a heat cycle, I do not recommend it, as there is a much higher risk of complications. During a heat cycle, the tissue is much more friable and blood vessels are much larger leading to a higher chance of bleeding during the operation and potentially a longer recovery from surgery.

The spaying itself was $225 but the anesthesia and other added costs that go along with it added up to about $600. Was not expecting that!

I live in Ontario and we paid $400 for our Shih-Tzu puppy to be spayed. That included bloodwork, microchip, and it was done by laser so that recovery would be easier and less painful. We actually paid about $500, because she needed a stubborn puppy tooth removed, but the actual spaying was $400 including tax.
