I went to a bridal shop this weekend and found a dress I loved but they said I had to pay the full price up front before they ordered it. Is that the norm? I thought you put a certain percentage down and then payed the rest when the dress came in.
Were you asked to pay full price or a down payment?

@MissDallasCowboy: I ordered my dress from an Alfred Angelo and I was asked to put half down when I ordered. Maybe if you’re going through a smaller boutique they need to pay for the dress in full in order for it to be made?

Generally, you only put down a percentage and then pay the rest when it comes in. I’d be suspicious of a shop that wants everything up front.

I put down 50%, which is what they required to put in an order. I’ve never heard of full price just to order it, but it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. I’d be curious as to what the other bees have to say about this.

We put down 50% when we ordered.

At DB you have to pay the whole amount.

Most bridal shops require 50% down and the rest when it comes in 10 to 14 weeks. If you order on line it has to be paid in full.

I put down 33%. I am to pay another 33% when I have my first fitting, and the final balance is due when I pick the dress up. I would be extremely suspicious of any store that required full payment upfront prior to ordering th edress. It worries me in terms of what recourse you would have if anything went wrong.

Thanks ladies…it made me feel uncomfortable too. I’m happy to see most places ask for only part, I thought full was weird.

The shop I went to had layaway, and since I was over a year from my wedding when I ordered, I went this route. I paid 100/month until I had paid for 50% at which point the ordered the dress and then I paid the rest when it came in.
If I had gone the regular route they would have required 50%. 100% seems a little extreme to me…

It was 50% for my bridal shop. Everywhere I went to said about that, and you pay the rest when it arrives.
I’d be weary with 100% up front on any vendor. You have to be sure it’s a reputable place.

50% for me as well. I would be wary of paying full price before you even see your dress. What if it doesn’t arrive on time, they order the wrong dress, or it arrives damaged? Will they refund you?

I had to put half down to order and had to pay the remaining balance within 14 days of the dress coming in. But since my dress came back in 2 weeks (Alfred Angelo told me 8-12 weeks), they held it for about 2 months.

I put down half and the remaining half is due within 10 days of the dress arriving. I just ordered mine on Saturday (yay!!) but it’s not coming in until May-June.
I’m not sure how other stores work, but I would be wary of putting down the full amount before the dress arrives.
