@EmelK:  My future mother in law threw our engagement party so I have no idea as to the cost, but based on the spread of food she had out, I can bet it wasn’t cheap. I know my Mom paid $150 for the cake and cupcakes. There were about 30 guests.

We had a pool party/engagement party/farewell party. It cost about $3k for 75 people including bbq, booze and cocktail food. It was awesome!

We had 1 day to plan everything so it cost more than I would like but I didn’t have time to shop around.

I think that’s way too much money for an engagement party.  Your guest list is way too big.  People will celebrate your relationship at your wedding.  The engagement party should be a smaller group.

@EmelK:  My fiancee is doing ours for less than $600 (venue, decor, favors, and food)

It’s a brunch at a community center and we’re cooking.

I think I’m just gonna have some family and friends over for a bbq and call it my engagement party. I would never spend much money on it

Well now I feel a little bad, lol my moms throwing mine and she had to cut it from 70+ to 50and under, (which admittedly I was disappointed, bc the people she kept, some of them I don’t even like, and some she cut, I really wanted there). After I did the math though I can see why she cut the cost down.

We’re in Australia and holding a gourmet barbecue at my parents’ place, with about 30 people. It shouldn’t cost more than a couple of hundred for food/drinks/decoration. Our wedding won’t be much more than $15k!

We had a barbecue at my parents house… My dad made pulled pork and my mom made some sides. We had champage, wine and beer. I don’t think they ended up spending more than like $200 and everyone had a great time. Of course we only had about 30 people there..

One of my BMs did it for us. It was only friends no fmaily which I was happy for. So it was more relaxed. I didn’t have to worry about family squabbles or people meeting. Thank god.

We had like 60 friends show. Her uncle is from the islands and he stayed to cook some jerk chicken and burgers, we also had a fire pit and made smores. We bought beer and wine and some liqour but most friends brought extra beer. She hung up lights and lanterns, put out tables and chairs. I made a lot of apps beofre hand, and they flew. We started around 8 and every one went home around 4am! We had an amazing time and we spent about $250. We had lots of food and drinks left over though which she used for her birthday the following weekend.

I’m not an overly complicated person. Our families make things complicated, but our friends make everything so easy. 🙂

$15,000 D:

Our cost about $40. Beer/punch/snacks for about 30 people.

It was a Christmas party held the day after we were engaged (On purpose, surprise we’re engaged!), and everybody brought something delicious. It was a big awesome potluck At our house!

I considered that our engagement party.

SO & I threw an engagement party for his best friend & fiance.  Bride’s dad told her he wouldn’t pay for one since he would be spending a lot of money throwing them a wedding.  Groom’s parents were hosting a wedding for his sister a few months after they got engaged, so they weren’t willing to pay for an Engagement Party either.  Since SO was best man & I a bridesmaid, we offered to host a small gathering for them with just wedding party and immediate family.  We did it at a nice resturant mid week.  Not everone was able to attend, ended up being around 25 people and cost us about $800.  They were so happy and grateful.  It was the perfect size to be manageable and elegant.

@MsGinkgo:  +1, perhaps a Canadian thing?

We had out engagement party in our backyard, simply because it would have been a hassle for our friends to drive the 45min to FI’s parents place. We had about 50 persons over, and spent less than $1000. That included decorations (DIY + flowers), all the food and alcohol.

I figure you don’t want to arrange something similar, but something more upscale. We had a blast at our party though, so perhaps you could find some type of middle ground and still have a great time? $15.000 seems insane for just an engagement party…
