An obscene amount that I will never admit too.

My biggest budget buster is all the “extras”- wedding hair/makeup + trials, gifts, etc. You know… the “little” things that don’t have little price tags to match.

We had budgeted $10,000, and I think we’ll end up spending about $11-12,000, but still trying real hard to pinch all my pennies and get the best deal! We are expecting about 100 guests. The breakdown:


Dress: $250 (a sample Nicole Miller gown bought at a consignment shop)

Alterations: ~$250 

Shoes: $60

Jewelry: $84

Hair: ~$100

Nails: ~$40

Suit: ~$200


Venue: $4,800 (renting a house for three days, sleeps 20, wedding in backyard)

Rentals: ~$1,700 (plates, glasses, tables, chairs, heaters, etc, etc)

Tablecloths: $200 (plan to sell after)

Food: ~$1,000 (Family will be cooking, served buffet style)

Drinks: ~$1,000 (Wine will be donated, so more like $400!)

Cake: ~$100 (Mom doing cake & having smores)

Help Staff: ~$400


Flowers: ~$350 (Mom doing flowers)

Candles: ~$100


Photography: $600 (AMAZING High School friend)

Stationary: $350

Music: $0 (iPod, yay!)

Gifts: ~$200


Honeymoon, we are aiming for $5,000, rings will probably be $1,500. Fiance parent’s are doing the rehearsal dinner. There are a couple things that keep changing, too. Originally I HAD to have paper lanterns, but there isn’t a way to hang them. And at first I didn’t think we needed to rent an actual dance floor, but now I’m thinking we do. Still undecided about favors, but I don’t think they’ll make the cut.

No videographer, no DJ, no favors… I don’t think I forgot anything, did I? Oh, I didn’t add in the bachelor/ bacheloretty parties– I don’t know how much those are going to cost.

Grand total being… $16,489.50. Ouch.

Without rings and honeymoon, it’s $8739.50. That makes me feel better. 🙂

Estimates right now…

Venue (both ceremony and reception): $2200

Photography: $3800

Linens/tables/chairs/silverware/etc.: $4100

Caterer (bar + food): $6100

Soda fountain running during cocktail hour at venue: $300

Ceremony music: $400

Dress: $800 (not counting alterations)

Shoes: $187

Necklace: $100

Veil: $90 (unless I switch for another… eep!)

Gloves: $4

Florist: Unknown, hoping for approximately $3000 

DJ: Free, but need to rent equipment – unknown

Invitations: Unknown, shooting for $5 apiece

Reception decor (centerpieces, etc., not flower-related): $400

Dessert: We’re hoping to do a pie buffet – hopefully a slice per person so not too expensive.

Appetizers: unknown.


We had started out with a budget of $15K, upped it to $20, and now it looks like we’re at about $22K. Oops. And we don’t even have everything factored in yet…

We eloped and it STILL cost about $11,000.  I have no regrets, though, because it was perfect for us and just what I wanted.

Some of these numbers are making my jaw hit the desk. Wow!!

Excluding the honeymoon but including EVERYTHING else, we originally budgeted $10,000, and it’s looking like it will be closer to 12,000 or 13,000.

For those asking how to keep it under $15,000, here’s what we’ve foregone or saved on:

  • No engagement ring, and my wedding band was my grandmother’s
  • Venue is my mom’s house – free!
  • Kept guest list to under 80 people
  • dinner/cocktail party type reception, so no band, dj, or dance floor
  • We’re supplying the aicohol, and just beer, wine, and champagne – no hard stuff
  • No attendants
  • Artist friend is designing our invites as a wedding gift; we’re just paying for paper and ink
  • No professional makeup
  • Hotel we booked for guests is providing a free shuttle between the hotel and the wedding
  • Photog is semi-pro family friend charging rock-bottom rates and not using an assistant
  • I made our save-the-dates using zazzle and my own pic – total cost of $50
  • Minimal flowers, since we’re not having a traditional big-round-table sit-down dinner

So, what ARE we spending money on?  Here’s our budget so far.  It’s still early, so I anticipate unexpected costs in the next 8 months.

  • Catering, including food, cake, staff, and all rentals (tables, chairs, linens, tableware, etc.): $6500
  • Alcohol: $800
  • Gown: $1000
  • Shoes: $100
  • Groom’s suit: $500
  • Hair: $120
  • All florals: $500
  • Photography: $1000
  • Stationery: $300
  • Groom’s ring: $500

Total: $11,300

I don’t yet know how much we’ll spend on the honeymoon.  Maybe about $3500?  That’s a total guess, though, because we haven’t begun planning it.

Holy CRAP! I cannot believe how many people have completed weddings and honeymoons for under $10K! And even under $5K!!!!!

After all is said and done, our wedding and honeymoon will total about $35K (not including the $12K engagement ring)……. it almost makes me sick! We’re having about 150 people at the wedding (original guest list was 115)… the stuff just creeps up on you!

About $35k.  Both sets of parents contributed a chunk and we paid for the rest – once we realized that it would be fairly fancy with 150 guests, it’s pretty much what I expected.

Best Guess based on quotes and estimates for expected 165 paid by my parents and ourselves

Food plus tips = $11.2 K

Alcohol plus tips = $2.7 K

officiant and DJ = free

flowers and other decor = $1.7K

presents = $400

ceremony & 1st hour piano player = 250

Linen & plate rentals etc = $1K

Limo= $500???

Honeymoon to Bali= free hotel, flights $2500 + est $2K spending = $4500

Rings? don’t know yet

Engagement = 10K

= 35+K all included 

Items paid for by in-laws- rehearsal dinner, bus transportation for guests to and from hotel

Costs expecting to recoup= $1200 (sell table clothes and dress)
