I just put the specs of my mom’s ~2.75 carat round brilliant in Blue Nile and the prices are actually higher than what I know my parents paid.

They purchased it through a jewellery store that they have used for a long time. When I went to that same store to order my setting (they are a Tacori partner) and look for diamonds, I realized that they were quoting me prices that were much more expensive than James Allen and Blue Nile. I asked if there was any wiggle room and they said they were already discounting it due to my parents’ loyalty to them. Needless to say, we ordered the stone online.

@Future_Mrs_Dr_I:  Oh i def have, don’t want to threadjack or i’d post here too! It’s your basic solitaire, just with some teeny diamond chips and milgrain on the prongs to make it a touch unique! Pics really don’t capture the glitterball sparkle! But honestly it looks almost comically large to me in some pictures (finger size is 3.25), it really doesn’t look like a ring pop in real life. It’s the whole camera thing, stones always look so much bigger. Or maybe I’m just desensitized to it!?

and, um, omg, this diamondsbylauren site is nuts! There are rings on here I didn’t know would exist!! The super pale pink diamonds?!? Are you kidding?! and the prices actually seem decent (for what they are — i definitely won’t be seeing any of these under the tree this year, haha). Wow. This is gonna make me late to my dinner party….! drool!

I have gone to auctions.  There is a jeweler that I use that has a large estate slection and runs larger shows a few times a year.

I also have a 1.4 k I1 round it has a white feather but it sparkles so much it is hard to see.  I bought it from a girl at work that was getting a divorce.  $1,800

I used to have an egl 2.0 round J s1 from a prior marrage sold it for 4,500 cash.

    Word of mouth works.

@polyblonde:  Ha!! I already found it, see edit! Yes, the pale pinks, pale yellows….OMG. I’m not big on the vivid fancys, I like a subtle hue. Maybe that’s why I’m attracted to a bit of color in diamonds generally.

@Future_Mrs_Dr_I:  aw thank you so much!! and great to meet another tiny finger 🙂 i think my actual ring itself is a 3.5, but it always falls to the side. 🙁 i’m in the same boat as you, i think n actual 3.25 sized ring might get stuck at my knuckles on certain days. I want to have those little sizer balls added to the bottom, just never get around to it.

I’m with you, the pale hues are to die for!!! so elegant and classy! siiiigh, maybe someday 🙂

@Bubbles42:  was it clarity enhanced? You cannot get a 2 ct high quality diamond at a store in the DD for 10K.

@wrkbrk:  I’m not inventive enough to make that story up lol.

My dad has a real knack for persuasion it seems. Plus, he has learned the power of cash. I definitely took that lesson with me in wedding planning and got some sweet deals (like my venue).

Just me, but I would not pay normal jewelry store prices – there are a lot of other great options some of which have been mentioned here. I did vote in the poll but I am not posting the price here. It’s like anything else. Diamonds are like snowflakes – no two are EXACTLY alike and what matters to me in terms of color, cut, clarity and carat may not matter to the next person. I am thrilled with my diamond and though it was not cheap by any means, we are quite comfortable with the deal we got on it. We bought the stone from a reputable online source and had it set by a local jeweler.

@soy:  I’m not sure honestly. My friend is the husband and he just likes to volunteer financial information. I don’t ask questions bc I don’t want to engage the conversation.

ok that’s understandable…I just hope he didn’t get scammed b/c the DD is notorious for vendors that lure you in with cheap priced large diamonds and many won’t tell you they are clarity enhanced stones (which are basically stones with very low grade clarities and are “enhanced” with filler (that doesn’t withstand the life of a diamond and eventually may discolor, etc) but they can make a stone’s flaws appear less visible to the naked eye. This happened to me on my first visit to the DD (they were quoting me $12K for a 2 carat). I learned how they were so cheap after I did my research!
