akshali2000 :  The key to remember is that most of the wedding planners have so called “preffered vendors” and the planners actually get paid for the referral . Guess where that money is coming from .. your pockets … a friend cutdown most of the middlemen and found vendors on her own. Her major savings were in the decor and clothing front. She found this boutique in Georgia and they helped her with custom decor,  bridal n bridesmaids clothes , favors n all. The same was costing 3 times if going through a planner. While I would definitely keep a planner for all coordination etc.. but there are a lot of areas you can save on. The boutique she used is called PerfectPanache. I think they are on FB and insta.

  • Wedding: July 2018

We live in San Francisco, getting married in the Monterey area (3 hrs down the coast).

Guests: 250

Events:  Friday night is the Indian wedding + buffet dinner with beer/wine.  Saturday is the Western ceremony with cocktail hour, buffet dinner, and full open bar.

Estimated cost: $100K.  Our venue is $40K, which includes 3 nights of accomodations for 40 people and some chairs/tables.

Both of my wedding dresses (Indian & Western) plus accessories and alterations will add up to $5K, which I’d say is pretty good!  We’re doing our best to cut costs where we can but the sheer volume of guests and the fact that we are getting married in an expensive area is unavoidable.  I wanted City Hall, but it got vetoed by fiance and both sets of parents 🙂

  • Wedding: August 2018 - Banquet Hall/Conference Center

We are getting married in the suburbs of Chicago in August 2018 in a 3 day event with 2 ceremonies.

CEREMONY ONE:
3 events on Thursday/Friday will come to about $40K for roughly 150 people
. This includes priests, decorations, new clothes for immediate family and bride/groom, temple rental, breakfast, lunch and dinner for people, photo, and video. It also includes flights and hotels for close family since Fiance and his family will be flying in from out of state. This amount is being paid for by the groom’s family and groom.

CEREMONY 2 PLUS RECEPTION:
2 events on Saturday will come to roughly $70K for 300+ people
. This includes the following conservative estimates. Saturday is being paid for by my parents and me:

  • Rehearsal Dinner: $1000 (estimate)
  • Lunch: $2,250 ($15 x 150 people)
  • Horse for Baraat: $500
  • Ceremony: $4,000 (space rental + per person rate)
  • Reception + Catering: $25,000 ($80 x 300). No alcohol.
  • Day of Coordinator: $1200
  • Photographer: $5,000
  • Videographer: $2,500
  • Priest: No idea. $1000?
  • Marriage License: No idea. $500?
  • Decorator: $10,000 (includes chiavari chairs)
  • Flowers (6 bouguets, 9 boutineers and 2 garlands only, not decor): $500 (??)
  • DJ: $2000
  • Bride’s outfits (2) = $2250
  • Bride’s jewlery – TBD.
  • Groom’s outfits (2) = $1000
  • Wedding bands (2) = $1000 (or less)
  • Groom’s Gift = $500
  • Stationary: $2000 (STDs, Invitations, Menu Cards, Ceremony Programs, Thank You cards)
  • Thank you favors = No idea. Maybe $3/favor x 300 + tax/s&h = $1000?
  • Website: $85
  • Hair (Bride + 5 BMs): No idea, haven’t looked into. $500?
  • Henna Artist: No idea. $300?
  • Bridal + Mom Makeup: No idea. $200?
  • Bridesmaids Gifts: Not sure yet what it all will come down to. $500?
  • Misc. Decorations: No idea. $250?
  • 3 Night hotel (Bride and bridesmaids) =  $650
  • Hotel rooms for 4-6 days for relatives from India and close family = Wild Card. I have absolutely zero idea how much this will come to. It’s something my parents strongly feel they want to/should pay for. Let’s say $5000?

Not included in costs are engagement ring, honeymoon, trip to India for shopping, small party in India for relatives who won’t be able to make it, or any of the ‘gift’ exchanges that typically take place in Indian Hindu weddings (generally these take the form of cash, clothing, and/or gold). This also doesn’t include any pre-wedding events like a small at-home Mehndi, engagement ceremony, engagement party, or any potential showers/bachelorette parties. This also doesn’t include food for everyone coming from India/out of town for a week.

poeticallygreen :  Our plan right now:

250 guests; Florida; mendhi, ceremony, and reception; estimated cost if around $75K

I’m trying my hardest to pull that number down. Our parents are paying, but I just feel so wasteful spending that much money on a party that I, frankly, won’t even enjoy.

$75-$100K sounds accurate if you do a sangeet/dholki, ceremony & reception for 250-350 guests. Venue, food, drinks, and decorator will take up half the cost, and the rest will be all the little stuff like clothes, photo, video, flowers, DJ, gifts, ethnic traditions, baraat, etc.
