I see some beautiful dresses. I prioritized where I wanted to spend money and the dress wasn’t it.  I am borrowing mine  from a dear dear friend who is my same size exactly. It fits perfectly. She LOVES recycling.   It sounds crazy but she bought it for $10 online from China and it cost $90 ship it.  It actually is cute but I know better than to linger over pics and try on dresses in salons b/c I love new things. I  want my practical side to win out on this one too so I’m doing my best to resist temptation.   I think the most expensive thing about it will be to clean  it afterward.  🙂

It is my second wedding, I had a $750 dress whn i got married the first time 11 years ago. This time, I wanted something simple with some color. I have red hair and white washes me out. I found a lavender satin bridesmaid dress for $10 at goodwill. I am very short. So the extra length will be altered to be a small train.  The dress is  a simple empire waist halter style, and friend of the family is going to alter it for me. She is going to use lace fabric to lay over the satin with the exception of a strip down the front. I will place a broach under the bodice. The design is the same as one I saw in a bridal magazine for about 1500. My total cost will be about 60-75 dollars. 🙂

My dress was $430 with shipping, bought it on craigslist. Maggie Sottero Grace Kelly, the corset back made alterations unnecessary!

So, $430 for shoes, $0 for alterations and slip (borrowed), $20 for shoes, $20 for bra, jewelry gifted.

Then I sold it for $330! I knew I didn’t want to spend a ton on my dress, I was just lucky I found my perfect dress for a deal instead of having to settle for something else.

my mom offered to pay for my dress (as she’s done for both of my sisters) and didn’t pressure me into staying within a certain budget. but i am a thrifty person and can’t justify buying a dress that could pay for a few months rent. my ideal dress would have been $100 or less, but my realistic goal was $300. I found a dress that i LOVE for a little over $300, by my mom randomly qualified for a discount because of her university employment (what?!) so i got it for about $250. perfect! and i have a lady in my hometown who will make my veil and do alterations for about $40!

My budget was originally no more than $700. I found a dress on bravobride that I really really really wanted and it was NWT being sold for $200 (original price $1600) but when I tried it on I didn’t like it so much. I went to David’s Bridal and tried on a dress that I wasn’t intrested in but my bridesmaids encouraged me to try anyway and I LOVED IT. So my dad made out with only spending about $500 and thats with the special garment bag. I haven’t done alterations yet but I only need slight hemming at the bottom and my mom’s friend who is a seamstress will do it for me. I bought my bra and slip from ebay both for $40 bucks and its the davids bridal bra and slip (YAY!!!). No shoes needed b/c I’m having a ceremony on the beach and will later wear a pair of silver thongs with rhinestones that cost $15. No veil b/c it will blow on the beach. Still up in the air about a tiara. Bracelet from a bridal shop going out of business was $25 and my earrings $18. Still searching for a necklace.

I really thought when I went dress shopping that I was going to find a simple dress, nothing too fancy.  I thought I was going to spend maybe $600 – $700.  My mom wanted to pay for my dress, so I was keeping that in mind also.  Went to a boutique and fell in love with the 3rd dress I tried on.  Tried on several others after that one and then tried "The Dress" on again.  Still loved it.  Then went to David’s Bridal and tried on several dresses there, but didn’t fall in love with any of them.  Went to a third place, found a couple, but still didn’t give me that warm feeling inside.  I tried, I really tried to get an inexpensive dress.  Needless to say it was a little more than I had gone into thinking I was going to get.

 Dress – $950

Alterations – between $100 – $300.  Haven’t done this yet still waiting for it to come in.

Veil – was included with the dress, it was either 10% off dress that day or your veil was free.  That saved me $200

Shoes – found a pair for $28

Still need to get tiara and my bra.

My mom and I went in half for the dress, so we both stayed under my budget.

I paid $1500 for mine, although I had wanted to stay below $1k.  Alterations will probably be around $150.  So, it could have been worse…

My veil on the other hand…cost way too much, but it was so perfect, and I just coudln’t see myself making a cathedral lengh veil with lace all around!  Way to much work and not enough time.  My mom ended up buying it for me, which was so nice of her.

my budget was $1200.

I fell in love with a dress that was $2400.

I wrote it off as the one major splurge I was allowed to have. Sometimes I still feel ridiculous… it’s just one dress!…But boy, do I love it!

I bought my dress (white cotton, strapless, beading and silver embroidery at the neckline and waist, calf-length, with pockets) at a consignment store months before I’d met my fiance. I wasn’t sure when I would have an occasion to wear it until we decided on a daytime garden wedding, and I decided that my pretty white dress would finally have a chance to come out from the back of the closet… so it’s either free (since I already owned it) or technically, $50. And I’ll be able to wear it out for dinner and dancing again after the wedding, which is kind of awesome.

bought a headband with a big fabric flower on it from urban outfitters for $18.  They have lots of head accesories, and I never would have thought to look there!

silver ballet flats from Nordstrom using a gift certificate, so they were also free(ish). I just had my second back surgery within 4 years so no heels for this girl for a while.

I found a dress on eBay for $87 (including shipping!!) but when I got it and tried it on, it didn’t feel like "the" dress. So I’m going to St. Louis this weekend to a bridal salon to try on a few more… it’s just so hard for me to find the perfect dress, because I can’t go dress shopping with my mom… she lives too far away!

I really wish I had found this website BEFORE I went dress shopping!!!  I didn’t know about all of the wonderful places out there to get samples, pre-owned or discounted dresses.

Made the mistake of not setting a budget and ended up with a $3600 dress (honestly, I almost bought a $5,200 dress and chose the other – not because of cost but style).  I do love it but really….

Plus a Vera Wang veil (which is fairly simple and no one will know is VW!) for $300 and a Monique Lhuillier sash (which is essentially just a ribbon and again, no one will know it is ML!) for $300.

And the dress hasn’t come in yet so I have no idea what alterations will be necessary or the cost.

Yikes!!!
