@moderndaisy:  Wow!  That’s major upward mobility – impressive no matter where you live!

I feel as though I should’ve noted in my post that I’m basically a hermit, so that probably accounted for some of the savings.  Plus, I’m sure there are all sorts of things that I take for granted now that I didn’t do before that just don’t occur to me because they’re so mundane – daily Starbucks? – but hat I would miss horribly if forced to give them up.  And I get what you mean about the apartment and the car.  I tend to forget about things like that, but when I imagine my husband and I living the same way we do now five years in the future I get all, “Wait a second!”  I get jealous, too, of friends of mine in other states who can buy their own homes.  We’ll probably never move, and I break out in hives imagining what we’d have to save for a downpayment on anything decent.

@lezlers that is AWESOME that you were able to go to night law school and get such an awesome job. I think that you’ll be sooo happy later that you were able to put so much away for retirement.

I think that school choice those has gotten harder lately, especially in the past few years as jobs have really disappeared. I’m only 2 years out of law school but even when I was applying it seemed like it honestly might not be worth going to law school if I couldn’t go to a top tier one because I might not be able to get a job otherwise. And I did have friends that went to 3rd and 4th tier schools in my state and so many of them were totally unable to find jobs! Even people with good grades from my school ended up working non-legal jobs to make ends meet until they were able to find legal jobs (took some up to 18 months). And unfortunately most top tier law schools don’t offer night classes. There is only one top tier law school in Ohio and they don’t allow you to work at all your first year, and don’t offer any night classes or part-time. So, it kind of sucks.. but it seems like unless you have some kind of connections you know will get you a job after school, you need to suck it up and go to the best one you can and just take the debt otherwise you prob won’t find a job.

@teaadntoast: We have totally hijaked this thread ….

The only highlight of my football weekend last weekend was UGA losing (since Tech and the Colts both lost too).  I’m slightly obsessed with football and still love watching college games.

And now back to the discussion of saleries / jobs / degrees / etc …..

I make a higher than average salary than most people I know.  However, in my industry, my salary is on the low end.  So, I could leave and easily make more at another company, but I LOVE my co-workers and the work atmosphere and there is some value to that.

Just got my new raise and make a little over 80k. I’ve only now gotten to the point where I’m “comfortable” and am not worrying about money constantly. I think you must factor in the fact that I live in a big city where “starter homes” cost about 500k.
