I’m setting up our registry and trying to make sure our items are in good price ranges. Thing is, I have no idea what most people spend on wedding gifts. My guests are socioeconomically diverse, and from all over the country. I want to make sure what I have registered for will give my guests options in the price range they want to spend.
So, as a couple, how much do you spend on a wedding gift? Feel free to leave comments about differences in spending as a couple vs single, or if you spend less when you have to spend a lot to be at the wedding (wherever we were to hold ours, most guests would have to travel.) Do you spend differently if you cannot attend the wedding? And if you want to give the context of your income, that would be awesome but I know not everyone is comfortable sharing that 🙂

For me it really depends on how well I know the person and where the wedding is. I try to follow the “cover your plate” rule. But, for a close friend I will do more than that amount. Also, I know the cost of a wedding in NYC is going to be a lot more than one in upstate NY so that will also change the amount I spend or give as a gift.

Depends: close friends and family are about $100, and more distant friends or family are closer to $50 or $75.

You do need a wide range. While most people may spend $50-$100, that doesn’t mean they buy a single item at that price. A lot of folks may several more inexpensive items. Others will buy a single larger gift.

On average, $50-$100, but for very, very close friends somewhere around $200

My Darling Husband and I usually give somewhere between $200 and $500. We factor in how close we are to the couple, the time and expense on traveling to the wedding, the norm for the area, how expensive we think the wedding is. For shower gifts, I usually aim for $50.
