Roughly 20%, but it really depends on the service.  More if it’s great, less if it’s mediocre.

I always leave at least 20%…call it server’s guilt. Usually, I give 20% and round up…slightly more if we just split an app, or my toddler comes & just eats a side (i.e. more work, but smaller bill, I will tip more).

Usually around 20%. I don’t get all exact so it probably varies between 15 and 25%.

20%… easy to do the math in my head!

@les105:  LOL, I was a server (and bartender, hostess, banquet captain) for years, I have server guilt too!

We never tip less than 20%, even if service is so-so. I will speak up if we receive bad service though.

Depends on service, as well as where we’re eating. If it’s a place we go often, we’ll usually tip more generously since we see them all the time. 🙂

20 or a little more, unless it was distinctly bad service.  Then, more like 15.

ETA: I also try to be mindful of whether we got an extra good deal (eg happy hour, 2 for 1, etc) and tip extra accordingly…

I said “depends on service.” Default is 20%. If the service is truly bad we’ll leave 15-18%, and if it’s better than average we’ll go up to 25%.

I usually default to 15%, sometimes 18-20 if service was good, and I almost always tiip 40ish% at my usual lunch place.. it’s always 11 bucks with tax, and I round up to $15.00.

But here servers make more than in the states.  Regular minimum wage @$9.00/hour.

We try to give 20-30 percent at least, but we’ve done more. If it’s crappy service, it’ll be 10%. If it’s awesome amazing service, anywhere from 30-50%. I was a waitress for a year, and Fiance had to listen to me harp on shitty tips…but he also heard me be super excited about amazing tips.

15% is for absolutely terrible service, although my husband believes 20% is bare minimum.

Serving is a hard job. Too many people look for ANY excuse to tip poorly or not at all. The system of tipping may be hotly debated but it won’t change just because you (collective you) stiff a server once a week. I digress. But yeah, never less than 20%.

It is rare that I receive poor service anyway (even if my perception of poor service is likely more forgiving than others).
