    Just looked in my village the average semi-detatced 3 bed house is £304,069 so $508,677….and this is a small village with few ameneties. We are only 10 mins drive from a station though, which is 50mins into London……where an average 3 bed semi is over $1m. I just put my house on the market. This isnt mine but its the same style and price bracket.

    I wish we had more space in the UK. Everything is cramped, so even when you go outside the city….prices are still high and space is still limited.

    We are a 90 minute commute to Washington DC, so a bit out in the countryside. The upside is that we have space and quiet. The downside is that people typically spend 3-4 hours each work day commuting. So there’s a big trradeoff, but to get a house like ours within a 45 minute drive of the city would easily be 2-3 million dollars. We don’t have that kind of money.

    There are 14 3 bedroom homes currently for sale in our half of the county. The median price is $398,427. This is brought down by 3 properties listes in the $299k range. A typical price is right around $425k. The least expensive is $299,700. It was built in 1868 (so 146 years old) and is 1300 square feet (120.8 sq meters). There are no interior photos on the listing, which means it probably needs a total gut job. The most expensive is $599,990. It was built in 1985 and is 1200 sq feet (111.5 sq meters). It definitely needs some updating to bring it into this decade, but it is definitely liveable and has lovely gardens. So yeah, if you want space and don’t mind 3-4 hours of commuting each day, you can pick-up a 3 bedroom for under $500k in the DC area. But of you want a shorter commute, you’re going to have to give up something (lot size, sq footage, school quality… something!).

    We live in the San Francisco Bay Area in California, and, well, you don’t even want to know.  We go so far off the poll chart in the city (inland you might be able to find something at 600-700 or so) that it’s not even funny.

    We live in NM, USA.

    The one we live in is valued at 130K or so as is the rental property. We paid less than 100K for each. We put about 20K into each and redid them completely. People stop on their walks and tell us these houses are their favorites in the neighborhood… and they haven’t even seen the inside or backyard. When we move to the other side of town we are looking to spend 400-500K. You pay more to live in the mountains.

    I’m currently in north/central London (UK) and 3 bed apartments here easily go for upwards of USD $1.5 million. In central London proper it’s more like $3.5 million (and more if you go to Kensington & Chelsea). No one I know can afford to buy in central London.

    The prices in London were completely unaffected by the property crash and continue to inflate because of the oligarchs etc who price normal people out of the market.

    I voted 3-400k IN my neighborhood. But really as the economy rebounds and the housing market increases we’re surpassing 400. If you get into Seattle you can’t get one for under 450-5 at this point I believe.

    MsJ2theZ: I’m so bummed I didn’t buy that 2bd condo in Cap Hill in 2010 — they were asking $175k and it eventually sold for $155k. Fail.

    In NJ homes are expensive. Around 400,000 for a 2-3 bedroom home built in the 40s or 50s. New construction- 1 million and up. At this rate, we’re going to be renters for life.

    We just bought a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house in central North Carolina in a good neighborhood for $185k. We put a full price offer in the day we saw it/day after it was put on the market. We had been looking for a while but every house we looked at would be sold by the next time we could see it again.

    We’re about an hour and 20 mins from London. A decent 3bd detached home will be $500k. It does get significantly lower the further you move away from London, so I am trying to convince DH to move away.

    Where I grew up, a 3bd is easily 175k-250k depending on the exact area and how nice it is. My brother has a 3bd home (but with a tiny yard) and he paid $230k at the height of the market. It’s 185k now I think.

    This is probably the greatest reason I consider moving back to the US.

    countingstars:  In San Antonio our eletric is owned by the city, I dont think I have had a eletric/gas bill over $200 for my 1820 sf. In Houston, it was more like 400 but that house was much bigger and had higher ceilings (Cathedral in LR for example) they have private companies but they compete so prices are not horrible. We DO heat our homes because Texans are weenies for the cold. But, we dont have the kinds of heating systems like they do up north where heating oil makes the cost of heating so high. I do hear our property taxes are higher in Texas but that is because we do not have a state income tax so I think it either evens out or Texas still saves you money. Also people often ask if our salaries are lower. In some cases, yes, but not by a huge margin and not enough to undo the cost of living advantage (not by a long shot). Like I said, I don’t understand how people who DONT live in Texas survive.
