@Sulli301 WOW!  Gorgeous cake.  Totally worth the splurge, I’d say 🙂

$20 for the supplies. It’s a gift from our groomsmen’s wife! (We plan on tipping her generously however.)

We got a three tier cake and a separate sheet cake so that our caterer can cut it in the back so the distribution goes faster.  And we got it from the best baker in town, so the price was higher than we would have wanted, but it will be great.

If we do the cake through the caterer, it will end up being $800-850…I can’t fathom spending that on cake, so we may do alternative desserts instead or order through an outside baker.

Ours is a 5 tier, 4 flavor, each with different filling, fairly elaborate design with ribbon, gum paste flowers and gold dust, serves 190 ppl, delivered and includes first anniversary cake to freeze. $400.00 from WOW cakes in Wichita.

@CorgiTales:I decorate cakes as a hobby.  For many years my mother did it out of her house.  Even a simple sheet cake is a lot of work–it’s a big pain just to get the frosting smooth.  If you are truly having a common-flavor cake without filling and almost no design, you should be at $2 a slice, maybe even less.  Even this takes hours to put together.  This should be easy to find in Columbus–try any grocery store.  Quite a few do have good bakeries and that’s where many independent decorators got their start.

As far as delivery is concerned, it is tricky to get several large layers to arrive in one piece, and be assembled.  If you don’t know how to put together cake tiers correctly, this isn’t a party trick for first timers.  Caterers also have an unnatural attraction to wedding cakes–I haven’t seen one that can’t resist bumping into it.  There is usually a patch job involved.  That $50-60 bucks is well worth the piece of mind.

We are certainly able to make my cake–but we are farming it out–too stressful!!!
