Hey there, hive. So I want to have tiny three tier cakes for each of my guests, allowing them to choose the flavor on their rsvp cards. Has anyone done this? One chick quoted me $125 per – and that seems a li’l bananas. How much were you charged? Guess I should add that we’ll have fewer than 20 guests. Thanks!

Well considering a cupcake can run you around 3-6 bucks each then I would think that a three tier-cake per guest would be a lot. You have to keep in mind that the more layers you have the more icing and detail that is done along the edge of each cake. In other words they do icing in between the layers to hold the layers together, then they ice the outside of the layers, then they come back and put a line/bead of icing where the layers meet so that it looks nice and finished. There is a lot of work to be had. You also need to keep in mind that most wedding cakes run anywhere from 3-6 bucks a slice.
Then if you are doing multiple flavors that the guests choose then the bakery has to make up more batches of batter which takes them more time instead of doing just one flavor. You might save some money by having just vanilla cake and having the flavor choice be the filling between layers and the icing being the same for all

That amount actually seems low to me, for 20 individual three tier cakes. There is a ton more labor involved in making lots of little anything, and that’s where most of the cost is in wedding cakes, the labor.
