I was just talking to my family from NJ and they were saying that their family of 5 (all with no incidents) pays almost 5k a year for their car insurnace… on 3 cars, 2 of which are over 15 years old. I was floooored!! But he says that’s NJ and perfectly normal there. We live in MA and pay about 425 for a 2013 CRV. I can’t imagine 5k! I’m curious as to what other states rates are, what year your car is, and if you have a perfect record?

Car insurance in NJ is crazy. We share a car (07 Murano), don’t use it to commute and our insurance is 1250 a year. I think Darling Husband had a failure to inspect ticket on his record but that was it.

I’m in Texas, driving a 2005 Honda CRV. I pay for a 6 month policy at $399, averaging to $66/mo. My husband drives a company car so his is not on my policy; it’s just me and my claim/ticket-free little car. I think I get a lot of discounts for mulitple policy and long-standing customer and things like that too.
Edit: OH, I can’t read, you said year, not month. That make a lot more sense with the poll options. Pretend there’s one less 0-200 vote and one more 601-800. Lol.

When I lived in SC it was about $1000 per year, now I’m in NC and I pay 1370 per year for my one car.

Yeah, NJ car insurance is ridiculously expensive. We share 1 car (2013 Jetta) and pay over $2400 a year. We put less than 5K miles a year on the car and don’t use it for commuting. We also live in a very expensive area with on-street parking and its a flood zone.

$135/month for a newer BMW, full coverage and low deductibles. I had a minor accident last year, but since I’ve been with my insurance company for 12 years with no claims I got one “free” claim. My fiance has his own policy and pays a tiny bit more than I do and he drives a sports car.

I pay ~950 for the year on a 2006 Toyota in IL. Perfect record. Darling Husband is on my policy and it’s because of him, when I first put him on the policy, that it went up. I blame him. 😛

I live in New Jersey and pay a little less than $800 a year for my 1994 Honda Accord. I have one ticket for “failure to observe a posted sign”. I do not have collision insurance.

@pinkshoes: I pay my car insurance every 6 months and it’s about $300. so about $600/year for full coverage. I’m 30, so that’s an additional discount, accident free, no speeding tickets, and I drive a 2009 Pontiac Vibe.

NJ is ridiculous. I’m in Brooklyn which is pretty high too. I pay $1500/yr for full coverage on one car that we don’t even commute with (5000 miles/year). It used to be around 2000 but it’s inched down over the last few years, probably because I’m getting old, lol.
If your family has teenagers on their policy $5K doesn’t shock me one bit. It’s the liability insurance that drives the premium up, not the collision/comp, so the cars being older don’t make a big difference (and can even make the premium higher if they don’t have more modern safety features).

@pinkshoes: I pay over $2k a year for my car here in NJ. It’s full coverage with a $500 deductible and the highest liability limits. I have never been in an accident either.
ETA: I dont have any accidents but I have one speeding ticket and a red light ticket. My car is a year old.

I carry liability only on my 26-year-old car and it costs me $59 per month, or about $708 per year. When I join FI’s insurance that will drop down to $37 per month – about $444 per year. I’ve got four speeding tickets but they’re all from 3 or more years ago. I live in PA.

I used to pay $240/month for my Honda Civic coupe when I was 20-24, and now pay $180/month on my Smart car. I have a totally clean driving abstract with no tickets or demerit points, have been driving since I was 16, and have have stayed with the same insurance company (though I price out different companies frequently).
I don’t know much about NJ, but in Ontario, people routinely discuss what a crock private auto insurance is.

Wow, I’m really shocked at how high insurance rates tend to be. I thought about 500/year was normal for a newish car. My husbands car is $273 a year for liability only cause he has a 98.

I’m in NJ and mine is about $1300/yr for just me and my perfect record. It was about half that when I lived in SC.
