A friend of mine has started a photography business about a year ago as a side job (she has a daytime job). She has offered to do the photography for my wedding. Most of the pictures that she has taken have been of families and children. So she hasn’t done a wedding before. I don’t know alot about photography, but the pictures that I’ve seen of her work are good. She has asked me to come up with a list of shots that I want and we will sit down and discuss it. I want to have engagement pictures taken, family photos before the ceremony, the ceremony, and the reception. I guess around 5-6 hours of coverage. What do think is a reasonable amount to pay her?

For a beginning photographer, it really depends and can range from a few hundred for full day coverage to around $900-1000. Most people at that level charge very little to get their portfolio built. Since she’s a friend and you’re trusting her, it’s sort of a favor for her also- depending on how far she wants to take this hobby. Do you know how much she charges for her family sessions? I would say find out and multiply up (assume a family session takes around 1.5 hours). Otherwise, just ask her.

I say between $800-$1000. Even though she is your friend you NEED to still put a contract together that outlines every ones expectations. So many friendships have been ruined over these sort of things.

WOW (to PP suggestions) I’m paying $900 for a photog. company that has been around for 15+ years and getting unlimted full day coverage! I’d say somewhere near $400-$500

@ADBK2011: $1,000 for a new photographer is pretty high for the Atlanta area. $600-$700 is probably more reasonable, but we’d be able to tell you more if you could share a small selection of her work so we get a sense of where she is with everything.
