I know there’s been a lot on the boards recently about timelines and such, but I can’t seem to find exactly what I’m looking for. I was wondering for those of you who had a buffet dinner how long did it take for everyone to eat? We’ll be having 1 meat with 2 sides and bread so nothing fancy. We’re expecting to have around 100 guests. Basically, how much time would it would take from when the first person goes to get their food until the last person is done eating?

I don’t know the exact timing, because I haven’t been to a buffet reception. Could you ask your caterer how long they recommend?
You also need to consider that you need enough time for all of the guests to go through the buffet line, plus time for the last few people to eat and finish their meals (because the first guests to go through the line will eat while the last guests are still getting through the line).

My friend’s wedding took about 45 minutes for roughly 220 people to get through the buffet line (not including time to actually eat the food). Some people were finished with their meals by the time others were going through for the first time.

It should only take about 45 minutes if you have 100 people. Have your DJ or coordinator dismiss 2 at a time so they dont have to wait in a long line. By the time the last person goes through the line, it should only be about 15-20 minutes, leaving 25-30 minutes for people to eat.

Thanks for posting this question. I was kind of wondering about this myself!

Thank you all for your responses. I asked our catered the last time we met with him and he said to allow about 20 mins for everyone to get through the line and 1 hour 10 mins for everyone to get their food and eat. Also, he said it would take 30-45 mins for everyone to get and eat the cake.

Your caterer’s estimates seem a little high! But anyway, I totally appreciate you posting this!
