    It was your friend’s choice to have a black tie wedding, and if she expects her guest to compenstate her choice then she’ll be disappointed. However, I am sure she isn’t worried about how much you gift her and will be so happy that you made the effort to attend. I would even go as far to say that she probably doesn’t want you to feel burden to give more than you can afford. 

    When I got married the first time, a friend of my ex-husband gave us a post-dated check. I wasn’t offended but thought it was sweet that he did what he could afford within his means.

    Give what is comfortable & affordable and then enjoy the wedding!

    Starbucks card would be weird. The registry item is fine.

    What you feel comfortable gifting. Travel is expensive.. many of my friends traveled to my wedding and I treasure the $20 key bowl some friends of mine gave as much as the $100 le creuset stock pot some other friends gave.
