Hi Bees, need some advice here. I’m hiring a girl I used to work with to do some chalkboard art for me. I will be providing her with four chalkboards and chalk markers. The boards are medium to large size and will have mostly words, and a few drawings (i.e welcome to our wedding, names of wedding party, another directing guests to the photobooth with a photo of a moustache and lips, a sign for the candy buffet etc) She is not a professional and does not do this as a career. She’s just a talented artist who I’d like to ensure I compensate fairly. Is $50 per sign reasonable? Too much, too little? Any advice would be great!

@mmn2014: For some reason, $50 feels a bit skimpy to me, but I’m no expert at these things! What about $50 plus a small gift to show your gratitude or something?

$50 each, so $200 total? I feel like that’s a lot for chalkboard art. I don’t know how long it will take her, but I would think around $100 would be good.

This thread pissed me off. If they’re large boards AND she’s doing them free hand then it will take her a few hours for each board (I am VERY picky when I do boards so it typically takes me even longer, sometimes up to 5 – 6 hrs total for large signs) . Time + Talent is valuable. If I were doing those boards then at $50 per board, you’d be paying me less than $10 an hour. That’s ridiculous. People undervalue talent. If that’s what you’re willing to pay then just do it yourself because it’s insulting to be paid so little for some much work and talent.
PS: I know this thread is old BUT if someone comes across it like I did, the information is still relevant.
