I am talking to a friend from high school (and his wife) to play the music for our wedding ceremony. Costwise, we’re kind of stuck. I think he’s afraid to say a number and I have no idea how much to offer. If you had/will have live musicians, could you give me an idea of price range? Thanks.

We had two violins and a cello and it was $400.00. They played for maybe two hours…while everyone was sitting and while we walked up the aisle, for a song that was sung and as we left.

Where are you located and how long are they playing for?
Although we did not have one we did get many quotes. For a duo just for the ceremony for about 1-1.5 hr of playing quotes ranged from $300 – $600+ in NYC.
And instrument makes a difference in price as well. Violin/Cello/Guitar are all the most common and tend to be on the lower price range. Harp is typically more $$$$>

- Wedding: October 2011 - Tre Bella, Mesa, AZ
The PPs sound about right. I was looking at solo classical guitarists, and for a few hours, it was anywhere from $200 to $1000 (depending on experience). Bands were about double. I would just have an honest discussion with them.
We had the same hesitations with our photog friend. But we just came out and said “We obviously want to compensate you for the wedding. What can we give you?” Honestly, since she was a friend, she would have been cheaper than anything else even if she’d given us a discounted price (as it was, she’s only charging us for equipment and processing which she rents/outsources, and we plan on giving her a gift card to the place she rents out of as a gift).
If they say an exorbitant price, just let them know it’s out of your budget and you can’t hire them.

We are having a harpist and a flutist, and we are paying them $500.00. They will be playing for about a half hour prior to the ceremony, during the ceremony, and a little bit after the ceremony; while everyone gets out of the ceremony area.

Thanks for all the help! We are in rural Virginia, so not exactly an urban hot-spot. 🙂 I was hoping for between $150-300 for the two of them, about 15 min of prelude music, processional and recessional. Sounds like maybe I’m ok! I just didn’t want to offer something in our budget and inadvertantly low-ball him. Thanks again!
