We are having a family friend perform a short and simple ceremony to get our legal marriage certificate but my Future Brother-In-Law is doing the larger ceremony out of state. How much should we give the person doing the legal ceremony?

You said it’s a family friend? I’d just get them a gift to thank them… maybe in the $25-$50 range?
Most officients around here charge $300-500. Church pastors usually ask for a donation of around $100.

fe0208: You might want to ask him. Some states require folks who can perform marriages to pay yearly fees to maintain that right. You might want to know if he has to pay annually and if so, contribute towards that and then a little more so that he’s not out of pocket doing you a favor.

He is a judge so I am not sure if there is any type of fee for him to maintain the right? He didn’t ask for anything so I am assuming he will just do this as a favor but I want to give him something.
Thanks for the suggestions!

We are paying $200 for ours only because my soon to be sis in law is a wedding planner and refer her to other clients.
