We are having good friend officiate our wedding. His wife is a close friend of mine since we were young and she is also bridesmaid. He is currently in the seminary to become a minister but is not ordained yet. We’re actually having a civil ceremony a couple days before and having him “officiate” our big wedding – but the majority of our guests don’t know he’s not ordained yet. He hasn’t asked to be paid but we want to show our appreciation somehow. Should we pay him a typical officiant’s fee? Should we gift him with something nice? What should we give him as a gift?

Sometimes giving money to a friend feels too business-like. A thoughtful gift could be better. You could ask him or his wife, if you don’t want to talk to him spoil a gift surprise, and see if they would like you to give him compensation for his duties. If they don’t want anything, I suggest you get him a gift. Many people suggst cufflinks for men. If you want to get him something more religous, since he’s going to be ordained, you could possibly look into personalized bibles, bookmarks, etc. If you have a local christian store, that would be a great place to start. You could also get him something associated with his hobbies.

We have a friend officiating our wedding and we offered to pay for his hotel room for him & his wife on the night of the wedding. He seems to be very happy with the offer…

i had the same dilemma as you. So far i think i’m just going to give her a gift card to her favorite restaurant so she and her boyfriend can go and enjoy a nice meal together. ANd also a thank you card of course!

My fiance officiated a friend’s wedding and they gave him a case of his favorite old fashioned cream soda and a $50 gift certificate to one of our favorite restaurants. It was really thoughtful because he wasn’t expecting anything.

We didn’t pay our officiant, who was a mutual friend of ours. Instead we took him out for a nice dinner and gave him a giant bag of official Angels gear- a jersey, duffel bag, etc. because he’s a huge Angels fan. He seriously got teary because it showed that we knew him so well and that he meant so much to us. 🙂

We are having our school principal(used to be our principal since we are obviously out of school now) officiate our wedding! He said he would do it for free but we are insisting on paying him something for being so sweet. We will have our best man give him an envelope with $50.00 in it. We arent the richest people so thats what we can afford and do 🙂
